I find it hard to believe it died with no overclocking or overvolting, but if that is the case the warranty replaces it anyway, no sweat except for a wait.

And if it's your only card? You're paying £550 to rent a card that you can use for afew days, then wait a month for it to be replaced, use for afew days... And continue.

No, they don't keep breaking when run at stock.

And how many people run their cards at stock.. First thing i did when i got this GTX460 and my i7 950 was see what they could do...

The GTX590 is aimed at the very top of the market, the people who overclock.

theres also a lot of users and reviews that overclock and overvolt within nvidia guidelines and have perfectly functional cards, his card will be replaced anyway.

The fact is, it's happened to numerous reviewers... That's not good. There's obviously a fault.

Yes, the reviewers tried to push 1.2v though a card with a 5 phase design(per GPU) when the 6 phase GTX580 can barely handle it. I have yet to see a reviewer pop a card with less than 1.6v(the maximum set in the BIOS) or with proper drivers.

The GTX590 is aimed at the very top of the market, the people who overclock.

And they still can overclock, they can even overvolt, something that AFAIK you still can't do on the HD6990.

But I don't understand, is there some kind of problem with the GTX 590?:confused::confused: Not with an nvidia card, surely?

There was a problem with ASUS' BIOS and software, but the card itself is sound.

I was just teasing. ;) :) I know all about it as I was quite active in this thread a few days ago.

Seeing all the explanations going back and forth over where the problem lies, I get the impression that the culprit for these failures isn't as clear cut as it could be. Essentially, it seems that all the following points play a part:

- The power circuitry isn't quite as beefy as it should be (it's less per GPU than a 580, apparently, due to less phases)
- hardware protection that isn't quite robust enough
- An older driver that didn't protect it

However, the card is completely solid when run at stock clocks and voltage.

Bottom line with my GTX 580 is that I'm gonna play it safe, so I'm not going to overclock and overvolt it. It's plenty fast, consumes enough power as it is and produces enough heat.

You might be interested in my new thread: Is my GTX 580 really pulling 72A?

Then do the opposite - try to undervolt it keeping stock speeds to shave off a few W :p

Now that's not a bad idea. If you look at W1zzard's review of it, it's only a bit faster than the standard one anyway, so I could probably get away with lowering the voltage and clocking it the same as a standard one. It would be interesting to see how much this tames it.

Incidentally, this was the same price as a standard one when I bought it off Amazon on March 21st, so it was a no brainer really.

Well I guess I jumped to conclusions assuming it was a faulty design. Good to hear it was an ASUS thing and not a NV issue. Not much of a surprise considering my luck with NV 7 series ASUS chipset boards being 3:2 failure rate.

yes,
and they still can overclock, they can even overvolt, something that afaik you still can't do on the hd6990.

So, with proper mature drivers, some decent after market cooling ,such as water or phaze change setup, in all liklyhood, the Radeon 6990 will get POWNT.

Well, even at stock voltages, with stock cooling, it is already overclocking better than the HD6990 W1z reviewed.

If the 590 is going to be the fastest card on the planet ,and it is,after tweaks,we can still talk about it untill something faster comes along, and frankly ,it seems Nvidia could have given it a little more love , but the 6990 is pretty much tapped from the getgo.so lets see the non reference from both teams now and give us some more to talk about, you talk like they have all died :) wizz as far as i can tell went straight for what he thought was a usable setting and it was ,under the correct curcumstances, maybe we could toast a 6990 in a similar fashion,to show it can be done ,sacrifice anyone, lol,I would still like to see some Overclocking results though
Hows it feel to have a top 6 core proc barely able to run with a midrange quadcore, anyway?

Wow, AMD made a GPU that actually is close to what nVidia created. Wonder how close we are to a single AMD GPU being this close to an nVidia card?
