ASUS Launches Overclocking HD 3870 X2

    Catering to avid users who require exceptionally fast graphical solutions, ASUS has today introduced the overclocking version of the latest generation of AMD dual RV670XT GPUs with the ASUS EAH3870X2 TOP/G/3DHTI/1G graphics card.     I foresee ATI coming up with a revised R680 that comes with GDDR4 memory and a PCI-E 2.0 lane switch. All that without any change in the design....could perform way better.

    In regards to this card, this doesn't have a expansion slot vent and instead goes ahead with four DVI ports which is a no-brainer, they could have had two dual-link DVI ports instead. Maybe they're using the four ports as a USP. Could have issues with ventilation despite two fans.

    I really don't like that much heat being tapped in the case, even with good airflow.

    But damn, 0.8ns RAM, that is very nice. Though 0.8ns RAM should be capable of a lot more than 945MHz, you can get that out of 1.0ns RAM.

    It would be nice if it was the original one card solution, I know it still takes up the same amount of slots, but it's just not the same. :(

    I thought someone already had a GDDR4 variant coming out?

    Still, though, it'd be nice to see ASUS throw some DDR4 on that beast. I think these cards still have a lot more potential than we've seen so far.

    6% memory oc doesnt justify and even higher price for the card. Asus already charges a tad bit more than the MSRP on these and original hd3870s

    only 6% this is not a big number for oc :)

    but I believe that 6% can I do with my 3870 x2

    Also if all see there is not one card model 3870x2 from gigabyte, so gigabyte ... is working on.... :D

    0.8ns = 1/0.8 * 2 = 2.5GHz theoretical max... = 2x 80GBps theoretical max = very nice!
    We shall see if the RV670s will need this amount of mem throughput.

    Don't care about the heatsink as this kind of performance NEEDS watercooling anyways.

    Then when the PCIe v2.0 bridge comes out... [RMA!? :D]

    with Radeon 4 around the Corner there is no sense in a X2 with the 2.0 bridge.

    I prefer the standard Asus 3870x2.
    Picked up 2 of them. One thing is for sure, like the x1950xtx's i had, you cant Fu** with the standard fan cooling!

    If i required the extra DVI ports, then i can justify the need for the TOP edition, but i dont even have the room for 8 x 22" Widescreens!

    After running a few benchmarks of various sorts, i found that i could overclock the standard card without any issues well beyond the 6% mark. I also found that the TOP edition, even with the two fans had higher temperatures due to its really inefficient cooling design.

    The standard Asus 3870x2 fan blows the air across the card, and releases the hot air via the back of the card thru the grill.
    The TOP edition causes hot air to get trapped inside the card.

    They will not be making anything for the 3870x2. The 4870x2 is just around the corner.
    Will be interesting to see if Nvidia will introduce the ported PhysX ability into G80+ cards.
