A really interesting read, definitely one to share....

Anand Lal Shimpi said:
We all knew that the RV870 was going to launch sometime before the end of the year, and we’re normally briefed on new GPUs around a month or so before we get hardware. The rumors said that the launch had been pushed back, but just like clockwork I got a call in June or July of last year. It was my old friend, Chris Hook of AMD PR.

... enjoy!

It really was a good article. Its one of the reasons why I like going there to read reviews and such cause you know they are going to look at something different compared to everyone else. It really has separated Anandtech just because of the ways they approach all of their articles.

I really wish nVidia would open up with G80/90, GT200, or Fermi so Anand could write and article about that. It would be very interesting.

I find it really interesting that Cypress was initially over 400mm2 since I've seen this rumor over on Rage about the refresh:

Rage3D
5990, 5890, 5860. There I said it. Probably April, since all 5970/5870/5850 are EOL end of March (EOL as in unavailable to order from then on). Hope my sources are correct or I expect to be quoted in sigs in the near future

I'm guessing it should push Cypress up over 400mm2. Though, Charlie did say he has only heard 1600 every from AMD and that was last March (09). Though, if they changed things in early 08, he would have never heard anything else.

It's mostly because of articles like these that I get a little bit ATI biased.

No marketing, no PR bullshit and pure honesty about what can and cannot be told.
I loved this article, as much as I loved the one about RV770.
