This is completely baffling me. I originally had an 9800pro 128MB AGP and was playing games like FEAR on medium settings just fine. I then installed my new X850pro 256MB AGP and suddenly something wasn't right even on the settings my 9800pro ran fine. There seemed to be a ton of hitching/jittering, along with a lot more hard drive accessing but the FPS were. In fact on the Fear test demo, it was reporting a gain of 30 FPS on the average side and about 4 FPS on the minimum side.

This morning I decided to try my 9800 pro again. Popped it in, cleaned out the drivers, loaded FEAR, Test demo ran with 0 hitching/jittering but according to the report 30FPS slower on average.

Is there something wrong with my card?

Sure did, had Windows needs to locate drivers for this product pop up every time I switched. I've gone back and forth a few times with the same result. The only difference is that AGP write is disabled on my X850pro. Perhaps this could have something to do with the hitching.

Regardless I've tired nearly everything to get AGP Write to turn on to see if that makes a difference.

I'm sorry, you must have misunderstood. It's an X850pro compared to a 9800pro here. By all accounts you are right. My FPS is MUCH higher. However, there is an inherent hitching/jittering problem where it seems like games are loading up textures and whatnot. So while the FPS is higher on the X850pro the 9800pro is smoother. It's completely baffling as to why. Not only are both clocks like 150Mhz higher, the X850 has faster RAM, meaning it should be able to load that texture data faster.

Ughhhh. The jittering happens at the same points too like clockwork.

Someone else has to have experienced this...

i think i have the answer.. the high quality texutures.. i had exactly the same thing.. the games frame test thingy ran perfectly.. as soon as i went into the actual game the whole thing just kept stopping dead every time i moved or looked around..

1 gig of system memory isnt enough for the high quality uncompressed textures.. my machine had to keep useing its swopfile and literally stopped dead every two seconds.. fitting 2 gigs of sysem memory cured the problem instantly.. the test your settings thing dosnt seem to need two gigs but the bloody game does.. he he..

so in that sense my machine played fear nicely medium quality textures on my 9700 pro but wouldnt play it with my x850 XT PE at high quality textures .. not until i stuck another gig of memory in it..

Interesting, very interesting. Too bad I don't have $100.00 to blow on a GB of ram.

However, keep in mind I'm not running the settings any higher than on the 9800pro, they're the exact same settings. The hitching happens at those same places even with CPU and Graphics set to minimum.

Hi! That is a very odd problem! I still have a 9800pro, and before I get a complete new system I wanted to get a better AGP card, but maybe I will keep my old card for a while.. :)
I have a suggestion though... I heard, that fear is a title where ati put some "optimalisation" in.. and it can eventually make it slower. This problem can be solved, if you rename the fear.exe to anything else. I would give it a try. I don't know if you have to change the Catalyst A.I. too, but I would try that too... I hope that helps! :toast:
