    Hi,

I would like to try make a FirePRO V8700 card from consumer card. I would like to change the video bios string.

What products could be possible candidates?

    I was thinking HD 4850/4870 1GB versions?

    Thanks,

I do not think there is similar PRO version out yet. I mean the new HD 5870/5850/5770/5750 is still a new design and PRO cards come usually a couple of months later.

So there would not be driver support yet. (And no bios string either available)

I can but there is no point. I need the extra features which magically come unlocked as soon as driver thinks there is a PRO card inserted. For example Solidworks can benefit from this.

The second biggest PRO card currently is FirePRO V8700 1GB and the HW specs look like HD4850/4870. There may be differences in clock speed but basically same cards (I assume).

ATI HD 4870 1GB --> V8750, can not get it to work

    Hi,

I just tested but no go.

I changed the video ID to FireGL V8750 (usin RBE 1.22) and the card is correctly recognised as V8750. Also the drivers install without errors (Windows 7 PRO 64 bit) but after reboot the card is not functioning and device manager has yellow exclamation mark on it.

As V8750 specification has 2GB ram, maybe 1GB messes drivers up.

I think this would be closer to home:

    FirePRO ATI FirePro V8700 (FireGL), RV770GLXT, 9456

But there is not an entry for this yet in RBE.

I really would like to see original V8700 bios :)

    Soft-mods

Because of the similarities between FireGL and Radeon cards, some users soft-mod their Radeon cards by using third-party software or automated scripts accompanied with a modified FireGL driver patch, to enable FireGL capabilities for their hardware, effectively getting a cheaper, equivalent, FireGL cards, often with better OpenGL capabilities, but usually half of the amount of video memory. Some variants can also be soft-modded to a FireStream stream processor.

The trend of soft-mods continued with the 2007 series FireGL cards, as follows:
Radeon product GPU Corresponding FireGL soft-mod
    Radeon HD 2900 XT (1 GB GDDR4 version) R600 XT FireGL V8600
Radeon HD 2900 GT R600 GT FireGL V7600
    Radeon HD 2600 XT (512 MB GDDR4 version) RV630 XT FireGL V5600
Radeon HD 2600 Pro RV630 Pro FireGL V3600
    Radeon HD 3850/3870 RV670 FireGL V77001 / FireStream 9170
    Radeon HD 4870 RV770 FirePro V8700
    * 1 Radeon HD 3850/3870 products do not have the DisplayPort output presented on FireGL V7700 product.

I've been researching a Radeon --> FireGL mod recently.

From what I've read/seen the best way to do this is through something called a 'patchscript'. Basically, this makes the Radeon card appear as a FireGL card. Then you install the FireGL drivers, and you're done.

The upside to this is that it's all done in software. Take the modded card to another computer, and it's a Radeon again.

Google '4870 patchscript'. It may be what you're looking for. Good luck and if you get this working, report back here! :)

Edit: I found this page in my history. Looks promising.
