The one thing I'm most interested in is the doubling of ROP's from the 4 series to the 5 series. Hopefully this will equate to a huge performance gain considering ATi has been using 16 since the x850xt's.

I found this picture. It may be the HD 5850, but it could be fake.

http://img5.imageshack.us/img5/8444/atitopicrv870.jpg

it somehow wonders me, why this really big card has only one 6pin connector? additional, these kind of cards is really hard to fit in most cases, like the hd4850x2, it would make it more difficult to sell it? i dont believe its real, but if it is, im slightly pissed of ATI;)

i plan to upgrade to 5000 series as soon they get affordable

It's supposed to be a 5850, which a single 6 pin connector seems fitting. The 5870 will most likely have two 6 pin connectors. Plus with the die-shrink it should consume less power.

It probably isn't as large as you are thinking (I hope you have never heard that before ), the 4850x2 is a 2x GPU card. ATI I don't think has ever made a 10.5" single GPU card, so I don't think you really have to worry here :toast:

Actually 3870's were quiet a bit over $180 brand new. I bought my first 2 for $254 a pop, by the time the 4k series came out I actually had bought 2 3870's in that time  But here's a difference you seem to be missing, the company changed hands between the 2900's and the 3800's. And while the 3800's weren't a ton more powerful, they were far easier on power, and a much better overall card, that was far more consistent, and didn't need to be clocked to the moon to be awesome. Think of it as a very much needed revision, now the company is better funded, don't expect them to have to do a revision like that again.

So don't expect the 6000 series Q2 next year, it's just a far different situation for ATI than it was for the 2k to 3k switch.
I got no real argument there......But I still think the 6000's will release in early summer 2010 with PCI-E 3.0...It's coming and soon too, will go great with the new sata3 6/gbps and W7 will be really big by then...Also SSD prices are dropping,so im sure that will help as well.....

I'm betting if they do make a PCI-E 30 version it would be a 5k series, the 3k series was introduced because it was just a vastly superior product, even though it wasn't a ton more powerful, it was a far better and different card. If they start it at the 5850 and 5870, that still gives room for a 5890 (could be PCI-E 3.0) or they could move up the the 59xx series. Thats why I assume they are sticking with 800's, just incase they got to bump up to the next bracket I would assume the 5900's would be the PCI-E 3.0 though as that would mark a major revision.

Time to move the HDD's or the HDD rack, could move it to the bottom of the case, or migrate the HDD's north to where you apparently store your spare paper  and then remove the HDD rack :p

I think it will be the size of the HD4770 with a single 6 or 8 pin PSU connector.
I also think the pricing of it will be fantastic. :)

I am anxious to see what this can do when it comes out. Been pretty happy with the 3870X2 and skipped over the 4870X2. But now I want to be prepared for the eye candy of DX11 if there is anything of value.

Would like to see ATI get together with the people at Folding@home though as it needs to use the cards properly. Having to make dummy plugs to use a program is retarded too. Would like a nice and simple click the install button and that's it.

I think it's about time you get a new case then. Also is that cheat notes in the bay above the HDD's?

the card's the same pcb' as the 48*0 series, this is a GOOD thing.. it saves them AND us money ;)
The card may be based off the 4 series.. oh wait that was based off of 3 series oh and that on the 2 series.....

like i7 is based off of pentium 3?? .... it's a stupid thing saying that.. if it works why change it.. there just improving the things that need improving and keeping the things that perform well...

I don't see why people are complaining about the so-called "30~50%" increase in performance...

if thats truly the case then that = gtx280 performance for $199~ thats awesome :)

I believe (personally) it'll be out in september, and I think we will be surprised, ATI .. NOT showing off means good things... if they where not sure what was happening they would use a lot of crappy marketing imo... just seems the way they work :)

(all this is my opinion and i am not aiming my responce at anyone, neither to expect to be aimed at, i will not reply :) )

also I think the strategy from ati is much safer then nvidia's atm, especially with the crappy yields as nvidia chips are expected to be much bigger (therefore more complicated/less chips per wafer and will the problems with crap yield this might bad for nvidia this time around just hope it's not TOO mad that ati have a silly lead for a while so prices stay high :(..)

4890 = GTX280 performance in many things. It is rumored that the 5 series will be using the same PCB as the 4 series, but honestly I don't think it's very likely, but I could be wrong.

I actually found that keeping the warranty and receipts inside the case... helps me keep track of all the stuff I would need in case of an RMA.

The HDD cage is locked in by rather large rivets... and the fact that this case uses 1.2mm cold rolled steel... I ain't cuttin/grindin it.

Thats not too bad of an idea, I just found it funny there was plain in sight paper in your drive bays, normally you hear people saying "clean up those wires" not "clean up those papers" :p

It sounds like you bought a pretty nice case though, but if you bought a nice small case, then I assume you seen it coming and expected not to be able to use X2 cards and even risking not being able to use the top single GPU cards, you seem like a knowledgeable guy, so thats why I assume that.

But like I said earlier, I don't think AMD has ever made a single GPU 10.5" card, so I don't think you will have to worry. If they do, you might have to drill out those rivets and move it down, then use bolts to hold it in so you can move it easier later.

It could possibly be based on the PCB, but I wouldn't see the issue with that. I highly doubt it would be the exact same as any of them, as thats what everyone was assuming about the 4890 and it's different.

I'm just so eager for these GPU's and for the PII 965 to come out, really hope the 965 is within a week or 2.

If it gets bigger (longer) im screwed.

Hey if you can afford the card you can afford a bigger case right

Just get a bigger case.

Or just do what I did after I got sick of new stuff causing clearance problems. Quit using a case altogether. lol I do plan on getting a bench station soon tho, to help reduce clutter a bit.

That is something I have considered, make the desk a case like MoonPig

But like I said earlier, I don't think AMD has ever made a single GPU 10.5" card, so I don't think you will have to worry. If they do, you might have to drill out those rivets and move it down, then use bolts to hold it in so you can move it easier later> FROM 1Kurgan1: hd2900pro 512 bit

I like benching stations, but I would most likely want to make one then buy one, and would take sometime, just easier to have a nice looking case. If anything my gf's comp would go on a benching station, as I use to that check if a part goes shot or anything else, I just leave that case on it's side 24/7.

Under what people type you will see "Muti Quote" hit that and it lights up, not you can tag that on as many posts as you want, and when you hit "Post Reply" finally, it will put them all in there as quotes.

Anyways beyond that, thanks for pointing that out, but it actually isn't a 10.5" card, thats a 10" card, which is .5" over the normal size, so would be tight in a lot of cases. But now the company is under a different ownership, hopefully we won't see that again. Here's a picture that shows a 8800GTX (10.5") a 3870 (9.5") and the 2900XT(10")
