Never notice that either, not like i ever played that game to compare...

After looking, yes the shadows do look horrible probablly due to the fact that they are at a very low resolution. I wonder if there is a way to make them run at a higher res? High, Medium or Low settings all look the same.

I found this post on another forum. They are talking about "PCF Support" and the lack of it on Radeon cards. Any idea what that means? Plus it has another shot of a crappy shadow.

its percentage closer filtering, its something that ATI hopped on later in the game and its not optimized as much as on nvidia cards which use it natively, ATI cards use fetch4 which use a different technique to render PCF.

Radeon 4800 series does support PCF (Percentage Closer Filtering). From what I recall this issue isn't present in BF2 1.0 but appeared some where along the line when it was patched. Both side of the fence have complained about this problem and it only occurs on certain maps and on certain textures.

Be that as it may, competitive players have disabled Lighting so they can see their opponents. As a result of this Dynamic Shadowing is disabled as well. Which is why this issue is no longer discussed (IMO).

Back at the ranch, I would like to see some examples of how an angle independent AF filtering looks in games. From what I've read so far the dependent vs independent in game photos are hard to distinguish.

This... 91c on 20% fan speed. That's a lot.

Raising the fan speed to 30% brings it down to 75c.

91 degrees for stock cooling at 20% is not bad, but it seems like this is gonna be like my old dead HD4850 that had fan state problems, IE the fan kicked in when it was so hot it was almost overheated

20% is and never has been enough fan on ati cards.... its not like you can hear the ATI cooler fan until ~45% anyway

cant you modify the HD 4800 series to HD 5800 Series in .ini files in the catalyst driver package?

I modified my 4850 to run at 55% fan speed always cause of the amazingly high temps. ATI should really try to get good stock coolers on there...

This is true, at around 45% you shouldn't hear it if you have at least 2 other unmodified, decent CFM fans in your PC Case.

My ati card never crosses over 65ºc at load while the fan speed is always 50% idle or load and inaudible...
Its the most silent card ive had so far

Some of the later model 4000 cards have much better coolers on them. I've got a asus version that stays at 55~c on 20% fan.

Ive a gainward card with a nice custom cooler with some pipes, lots of metal and a decent fan an its clocked at 700, an 4850...
I doubt it even reaches 70ºc when clocked at 750, it idles at 30...
