Do not agree, also not with the slow computer argument.
Win 7 runs smooth on my VIA 1.5Ghz board, XP ran half-smooth and Vista ran like utter crap on it.

windows 7 does seem far more optimised for low power environments, i've noticed that the RAM usage also varies accordingly (i've installed it on a netbook, notebook and my current monster desktop), it is an area where m$ have really outdone themselves over vista.

This have to do with Win7 is preloaded with less junk, shut down the junk on Vista and it ran great on my old PC.

I agree muchly here, whenever i use another computer (most my friends are not remotley techies) it seems so slow and lumbering, my friend has the exact same computer spec wise as my first build of this desktop i'm using (athlon 7750 dual core, 4GB ram) but it lags so much when i use it, and it takes forever to boot.

Crazy as this sounds, the card is now Furmark Stable @999Mhz with 1.325V.
All I did is change the drivers and download a new copy of furmark.
Now its seems to artifcact due to heat rather than crashing.

Well we're getting somewhere, but with how all other 5870's seem to be clocking, I refused to believe you had a lemon!

From what I've seen so far, only 1 5870 has shipped DOA that I know of at all, all the others seem to clock around 950mhz on stock volts, and 1ghz on 1.2X volts.

Keep rolling with how its working now and let us know how it works out :)

I will keep trying, if it still keep on crashing I will just assume this card is defactive and RMA it.
All these card are BBA there should be no reason for mine to clock so terribad.

I always do a non-clean upgrade, except when I get problems.

Same here. All the driver cleaning and crap turns out to be completely pointless 99% of the time.

Here is my MSI 5850 bios if anyone needs one

Some people have asked for it. Warning you will lose fan control with AMD GPU tool. It works to set the clocks but the fan goes crazy.

Zubasa, don't use Furmark to test. Use Batman AA to test.
What i thought was a stable OC was not. Vantage runs fine with 1ghz but not for Batman AA.

It could also be the new beta 9.11s that causes the hangs but i doubt it.

indeed, test a wide variety of games, since some games just never seem to crash the gpu (back in the ol' laptop days, gta4 could survive an extra 100MHz on top of my normal gpu OC without problems, whereas dawn of war 2 used to crash a mere 5MHz over.) So you need to make sure that everything is stable (furmark is fantastic for not crashing compared to some games, so something which seems stable in FM is probably not in the 'real world' of gaming)

a huge performance hit too, but dx10 was the start of a totally new directx structure, so no-one had really gotten round to optimising it, whereas dx9 performance was due to years and years of honing dx. So dx11 is basically going back to the 'old days' of improvements in both aspects ^^. Anyway i wouldn't say dx10 was a complete failure, since it lead ultimately to dx11. Anyways, i need dirt 2 to come out now and look amazing! It's annoying to finish crysis then want to play something else and realise everything now resembles plasticine models with light bulbs attached.

DX11= Improvements visually with performance improvements (Allready proven with BattleForge)

DX10= Improvements visually? with a performance hit (proven when you enable DX10 on anything)

DX10 was a complete failure.

Every time I see someone say "performance hit" i think of that damn hitler video we were all watching. Makes me laugh.

One question: can you plug the Twin Turbo in the fan header on the card itself? That would be nice..

yes you can, their are three methods, 12v,6v and direct to the card.

Thanks, I'm still relatively happy with the stock cooling, but this is nice info if I ever get sick of it.

it is indeed, but it can be a little loud at times if your pushing it for extended times when over clocked, since it'll eventually hit 60-70% after about half and hour or so of crysis. But if you don't overclock, or don't mind it being a little loud when under ral pressure, then it's all good. When i run normal games or am just using the computer for more mundane tasks, it is silent (at least totally silent compared to the case fan noise and the cpu fan noise).

Quick test: the fan is audible over my other fans at 30% only because the pitch of the fan is a bit higher, it isn't actually louder until 40% or so, and doesn't drown out the other fans until 60% (although i'll probably be buying a quieter case fan soon anyway).

Hmm, I noticed its loudness over 25%, but I'm using several silent casefans on half speed, and a pretty silent CPU cooler which I only hear at 100%.
