nice comparison benchmarks Gabkicks,, got the same Sapphire box as u ..what a title GTA4 is, it loves cpu ghz but seems to benefit so little from better Gpu

Yup, i ran those tests to see how much of a bottleneck i'd get from cpu or gpu depending on those games. Maybe i should post them in a separate thread so 4850 owners can see it easier? I guess... we won't be seeing any more patches for gta IV :(

anyone want my e8400? :D

I've been playing SHIFT for a couple of hours now, it seems the BSOD's only happen in GRID.
Too bad, I love GRID :( Hope a newer driver or DirectX update fixes it.

Note that I played the SHIFT demo.

Also BSOD'd after a couple of missions in CoD4. This is NOT a 1 game issue it seems. Will wait for drivers.

Well since everybody seems to be going after the 5800 series cards I'm not surprised at all.

The Sapphire 5850 is back in stock (as of this morning) and the 5870's are coming back in expected stock starting later today, 10/20, and 10/21. The only one that has a date that's 'far' off is the Diamond card which isn't expected until 11/3.

I've been checking every few days and so far it's been fairly easy to find the cards for sale when I check. Especially so the 5700 series cards because of the usual stigma that people go by when looking for the ultimate graphics card.

I myself have been thinking really hard between the 5770 and 5850 cards to replace my 4850 512MB card. I know that both are greater than the card I'm using now even if the 5770 won't blow it completely out of the water like the 3870--->4850 jump, but it's got other things that I hold extremely important (power consumption, dual slot cooler, and the 1GB memory) so it's still a great choice up.

The only reason I'd jump to the 5850 is to avoid changing cards next year or adding a second card later on. I may still just go with the 5770 and get a second card later, but I'm unsure still. Don't really wanna come out of pocket for the 5850. For the 5770 I'd spend $59 for the 5850 I'd spend $109 since I'm selling my 4850 for $100.

Meh, I'll just make a decision and live with whatever...neither is a bad way to go anyway it's all more power to flex and less electricity to use. :D

i think if you can go for the 5850, for the extra $50 you won't be getting enough extra performance in most current games to warrant the jump, but in games such as crysis the 5850 outstrips the 5770 by a decent margin, and although dx11 will be more efficient, it would be wise to assume dx11 games will take about the same amount of power as crysis to avoid disappointment. Based on that assumption, the jump to 5850 will cost you less in the long run, since 2 5770's in cfx seem to match just one 5850 in crysis:warhead. also, personally i think the jump from 4850 to 5770 just doesn't bring enough improvement to be worth it at all, considering that we still aren't sure if dx11 will be that much more efficient than dx10 is (but certainly prettier).

That's kinda my issue right now zilla. I was going to get rid of my 4850 512MB and go with a 1GB 4870 just a few weeks prior to the launch of the 5000 series cards.

Now with the new cards coming out and since the 5770 is roughly equal to or greater than (depends on the game/app) the 4870 my thought has since changed. Both cards have 1GB of memory, however the 4870 uses FAR more power than the 5770 which is extremely important to me as I strive to make my systems run on as little voltage as possible (every component). The 5770 is also quieter as it runs cooler so you can knock the fan speed down even further. It has the Eyefinity support which the 4870 does not, it has DX11 support which the 4870 does not, and it's smaller to boot.

Of course the DX11 part is just a bonus as I may never even use it anyway. The only thing I really use my machine for graphically is iRacing, and my 4850 pretty much has that covered except in the most extreme of circumstances. I run it at 1360*768 (32" LCD monitor@ 720p) with full options enabled and I get 60fps everywhere except for a certain track or two where I have to turn down an option or two, that or in replays if I have a field of 30 cars and full everything my fps will drop momentarily to 45-50fps until a few things clear out.

That is one of the reasons I was only looking to go up to the 4870 in the first place and the 1GB would help a little when 30 cars are on screen with every option enabled.

If you look at the same charts from Guru3d you'll see that what I'm looking at is the performance between the 4850 and the 4870 much like everyone else was when those two cards were new. Despite the fact that the performance isn't a huge gap between them, it's still significant enough that MANY people chose the 4870 over the 4850 when the single board cards came out.

Putting it into perspective, the 5770 and 4870 1GB models are almost exactly equal (one beats the other depending on the game), and you see why I'm thinking about getting the 5770. I don't play Crysis nor any other game on my machine anymore and haven't for probably over a year now. The massive extra power the 5850 makes for me is wasted totally, and while under load it will use more power than the 5770.

Hopefully that makes more sense as to my crazy thinking and why I was even entertaining a "competition" between the 5770 and 5850 cards. Obvioiusly a 5850 is far more powerful, but it's power I don't really need and may not for a long time. I'm just trying to figure out if paying for it now is better than paying for it later. :)

Rough number comparison...(4850 512MB vs. 5770 1GB)

Far Cry2

4850 = 18
5770 = 32

Dawn of Discovery

4850 = 24
5770 = 51

Call of Duty5

4850 = 43
5770 = 46

Crysis Warhead

4850 = 20
5770 = 26

Mass Effect

4850 = 47
5770 = 60

Fallout 3

4850 = 37
5770 = 50

Brother In Arms HH

4850 = 47
5770 = 63

Those are all from the same guru3d review that you posted. I know the 5770 is roughly the 4870 performance, but I don't think buying a 4870 instead of the 5770 is smarter for the other benefits you get with the 5770. Adding to that being on the first very early set of drivers, and the 5770 may yet get a bit more performance as time goes on. :)

Anything I missed that you think would help me further decide?

Forgot to mention it's nice that the 5770 only requires a single 6 pin connector meaning I can branch off in the future. The 4870 uses two 6 pins to accomplish the same thing so I'd need a new power supply if I wanted to add another card (I only have two 6 pin connectors right now) even though I've got plenty of power at 650W (700peak).

if you don't need the hd5850's power, then the hd5770 is the way to go :) since i would never choose a 4870 over a 5770, for many reasons including the single 6 pin, the unlocked potential due to drivers, and there is the dx11 support there if you ever want to use it too.

Thanks for the suggestion zilla, I'm thinking pretty strongly that the 5770 will be where I go. Since the 4870 got it's uprated version (4890), perhaps I can overclock the 5770 to mimic the jump from 4870--->4890.

I do have a lot of faith that the 5000 series will have even greater performance in the not too distant future once more mature drivers see the light of day. The same thing happened with 3000 series cards, and again with 4000 series cards so I'd say it's a safe bet.

Maybe I'll pick up the 5770 tomorrow unless I wake up and feel a little froggy or e-peen and pick the 5850 anyway lol. :p

Thanks a lot chaotic, it's about time I finally found an owner willing to say something w/o fear of the "why didn't you buy six 5870's" these kinda cards get lol.

I had two 3870's before which was great, but the single 4850 512MB card was even better than those. Now I'm looking to up the ante a bit yet drop the power consumption as much as I can. It appears as though the 5770 just may be my magic bullet. :D It's even more awesome when I look at the Xfire performance with two 5770's and still using such little power. Simply awesome!
