Unfortunately has been few years with no PC rig since I started working and carry notebook wherever I go. But I do remember the good old days where It was great to tweak the rig and squezze every Mhz our of every component. Unfortunately its not that much fun with a notebook :p

I have most of my components selected :

MSI Z97 MPOWER Max AC
IntelCore i7-4790K
Cooler Master V8 GTS
Corsair HX 1050
980 AMP!
G.SKILL Trident X Series 16GB (2 x 8GB)
SSDOCZ VERTEX 460A 480GB
Seagate Barracuda 2 TB

But Im wondering if this a good selection of motherboard / PSU / Memory

What do you guys think, considering I didnt overclock for quite few years now. I want easy but rock stable motherboard overclock..

HAHAH yea bro, I know what you mean.. Trying to overclock a notebook is no fun!
You could always try to put the notebook on the freezer and try to overclock it, could be fun.

I have some concerns about the MSI mobo and the cooler, any thoughts?

Now in a serious note, I think that config looks good. But personally I woudnt put my $ on MSI mobo. I would rather go for either a GIGABYTE Z97X-Gaming or a ASrock Z97 OC Forumula.

Even with high end CPU and maybe future SLI?

And forget the Cooler Master V8 GTS. H100i

MMM other options?

I was thinking ASrock would more for budget..

Not at all! At least for my experience. Maybe they look that way with their prices being lower than other big brands in some models but my guess is that they spend less on advertising and they can afford to lower. Other big brands your paying a premium for having their brand :D

i think you will fail with air, purely an educated guess.

Hope you succeed though !

You won't see 7GHz without at least a phase change setup. And then it will still be suicide-run only.

It depends, is your goal 24/7 overclock? MPower MAX AC will be overkill. Integrated voltage regulator on Haswell CPUs has almost negated the reason to need high-power motherboard VRM unless you are going to be putting it under LN2.

Benchmark Scores well I've fried a 775' P4 12 years ago, that counts?
Sup!

Cooling: I would rather to get something like Swiftech H240X or 220X, also Thermaltake Water 3.0 or 2.0 Extreme, 240mm rad may be enough to chill your processor, also thermal compound will be necessary and will affect so much … I recommend Arctic Cooling Mx4 / Mx2,

motherboard: MSI its fine, good Quality, good design, but I rather gigabyte for motherboards, and GPU's,

PSU: 750W 80+Bronze at least will be enough ...! even for a future SLI with the new cards,

Also have you consider delidding your CP for a drop out with the temps! ( @Knoxx29 bring me a help over here Fella!)
And my last question: what about getting an i5?

Hey guys, don't think you can beat Noctua nh-d15 in terms of air cooling, only knock against this is the size and color of the fans...poower any 750W would do, you can go with EVGA they've got a lot of discounts recently, mobo...Asrock or Asus would be tops.

You're right, I should have had at least explained myself.
Personally I never had one but couple of friends did had, lets say not so good experiences with their mobos and their RMA service. One got replaced with another faulty unit. Bad luck? :/

Just got the stuff this wkend! So excited. Couldnt find G.skill and went with some good Adata stuff :)

Just noticed the board as some kind of coating for extreme overclocks :D :D I've average overclocker but I wonder How fun could it be trying some LN2 on this thing.
