This is insanely stupid, but no one else has mentioned it, so here goes. Are you running the latest DirectX 9? Something is definatly wrong, because I can run F.E.A.R and Oblvion at almost max settings smoothly.

the new card is arriving tomorrow.. i bought the game today and have been playing it on my x850 xt pe type card.. i set the resolution to a wide screen 1200 x 800-ish setting.. left all the rest on how the game set them.. it played okay framerate wise.. the odd slow down nothing too bad thow..

but i get random crashes back to the desktop.. its not effected by hardware speeds.. slowing things down or speeding things up has no effect.. it just seems unstable..

when i get the new card i will see how it plays and if it effects the stability wth a different grfx card and different settings..

i can try it at your settings seek.. i aint exactly sure what they are thow at the moment..

Oblivion is very unstable at the moment. There are a few things you can do to make it crash less frequently. Defrag your HDD, open DXDiag and set Harware Acceleration Sound to Standard instead of the top setting, get all the latest drivers for everything...

Other than that, we'll just have to wait for Beth to release an update to fix some of this.

got the new x1900xtx card today.. jeesh does it run hot.. he he he

i aint talking core measurement figures just the good old fashioned finger touching tests.. certain parts of the card especially around the voltage regulators at the rear of the card are that hot u cant keep your fingers on it..

toasty toasty toasty.. he he he the software readout figures of around 75c under load dont tell half the story.. the entire card toasts..

even thow most of the heat gets pumped out the back the heat just radiated of the card must warm the case insides up an awfull lot.. at least an extra case fans worth.. he he

some first out of the box benchmark figures..

default 2005 = 10425

overdrive 2005 = 11698

default 2006 = 4865

overdrive 2006 = 5007

as for playing with oblivion settings its quite easy to see 13 frames per seconds at a 1600 type resolution in a forest/grass melee situation..

nothing peculiar about your card seek.. its oblivion.. set it too high and it will cripple it.. he he

dont get me wrong here i was just testing things... the game played okay on my x850xtpe card so its bound to play okay on a 1900 card.. but never the less i managed to get mine down to a low of 13 fps without much trouble..

the game still just crashes back to windows when it feels like it thow.. without the quick save option it would be unplayable on my machine..

there dosnt seem any pattern to it.. its just unstable.. its not the grfx card either thats crashing just the game.. it did exactly the same on the x850 card..

from what ive read in reviews and at http://www.tweakguides.com/Oblivion_1.html the game is hypersensitive to overclocking or any system instability. you could try totally returning your system to stock speeds and ram timings and see f that helps.

i have tried returning my system to all speeds kenny.. he he he.. even ones below stock speeds.. whatever the speeds the hardware is at the thing still bombs out.. normally instability should be affected by hardware speeds.. it dosnt seem to apply in this case thow.. its just as unreliable at super slow speeds as it is at super fast ones..

perhaps oblivion just dont like my system.. either that or its just unstable period.. quite a few folks complaining about it in one way or another in various forums..

It is the first version of the game. We'll have to deal with it until an update arrives, I guess.

ATI suggests that I replace my card. I told them about the ingame reboots and the stop errors. They said the best thing to do would be to have the card replaced. So I guess I will.

Also, I think my processor might be a problem, actually. Not that it bottlenecks my GPU, but... I have to set the settings in Oblivion quite low to notice any difference in FPS. That means the CPU is too slow. Well... I did want a X2 4400+, but I couldn't afford it. Perhaps the prices will go down now that 5000+ is on it's way.

dude u are totally away with the fairies.. the reason u dont see much/any difference is cos a game like oblivion is totally 100% grfx card limited.. any amd over 2000mhz is all it needs.. 2000.. 3000.. 4000.. 5000.. wont make the slightest difference..

u are reading things back to front.. time to wake up and stop believing all this crap about u read posted by folks who dont know one end of a PC from the other.. most/all modern games are gpu limitted.. fear.. quake 4.. doom 3.. seriouse sam.. oblivion.. u name it.. if they have frame rate problems its bugger all to do with the cpu speed..

how the hell can anyone get to believe an amd 3700 at 2.9 is not good enough to play games is way way beyond me.. jeesh.. wake up dude..

send your card back by all means.. just wise up to the cpu factor..

trog

ps.. u wanna see something that is cpu/system limitted.. try running 3Dmark 2001.. my current grfx card scores pretty much the same as my x850 did.. 31000.. now thats cpu limitted.. but we are talking up to 600 frames per second.. not 40..

basically dude u have the fastest single card gaming system money can buy.. if it dont go fast enough.. the problem is u not your system..

trog do you make it a point to be deliberately mean to the people who post here. This man is having a problem, and htis problem is making him unhappy. I've got 7 computers 2 3500 venices, 2 4800 x2's, and 3 3800's. the 3500's have x850's, the x2's have x1900xtx, the 3800's have sli 7800gtx. It just so happens that i have the same issue. i get crap with the x1900's and i get good perf. with the 7800, and the x850's actually do really well at lower res with a few cutbacks on the quality. This man has limited time, limited funds, and limited patience. So why berate him with your crap. He probably didn't know that the game was 100% graphix based, which btw it isn't. hence it needs a decent processor. and from my experience you are right as long as you got 2ghz or more it's good. But he doesn't know that. Perhaps limiting how much of and a$$hole your gonna be on this forum will help you a bit. He's askin the internet world of computer games, enthusiast and just plain old geeks for help why don't you do just that. Ok

Hmph. Could be so kind as to explain how the hell I could be the problem? Believe me, I know my way around computers. I have clocked the living shit out of this computer. That made no noticable change in framrate. Then, I tried resetting it to nominal clocks. Still a a slideshow. Then I tore the .ini apart with tweaks. I got mods. Practically no change at all.

This tells me that Oblivion doesn't like my system. Period. Just because the box says X1900s are supported doesn't mean they really are. Like psychomage said, the 7800 gets better performance, although my card is noticeably faster in all tests.

Oblivion doesn't like my rig. Or the GPU is screwed. Whatever the case turns out to be, Bethesda is having some major patching to do. As for me, I'm going to RMA this card.

You are not the problem and neither is your card. Keep your card, do a reinstall of windows, fear doesn't play that well unless you tweak it first. All i was saying was taht you've been trying to get this to work right and having some issues, and i don't appriciate trog bashing you in public forums. I have a lot of video cards and the x1900 series are still running on pooor drivers, and oblivion still needs some tweaking. Just bear with it for a while both companies will fix their problems and everything will get fixed. For now just drop the res down a bit or tweak it to get decent performace at least. I get about 70fps 1024x768 on a x850 xt pe. so i know you can beat it.

I've tweaked it further now. I get decent framrates. About 35 in forested areas. Well... I'll just have to wait, I guess.

Where did that little rant come from? Your very respected on these forums, but you will quickly loose that respect, and possibly get banned if posts like this continue. I'm happy to overlook this for now, and put it down to you perhaps having a bad day as we all do from time to time, but please keep your emotions in check from now on. Don't get me wrong, your help on the forums is much appreciated by everyone here. :toast:

well guys.. perhaps i was little blunt.. but that comment about needing a faster cpu really kinda got me.. it really is misinformed.. and just totally wrong.. so just where does misinformation come from.. ????

forums are wonderfull places and i love em.. but.. when guys comes up with genuine wrong stuff.. i just wonder where they get there ideas from. in truth i know exactly where they get their ideas from.. the very same place they get there correct ideas from...

now we have a guy who really does have the fastest gaming system there is.. he has the fastest gaming cpu there is.. but he thinks he needs a faster one.. ????

he has the fastest grfx card there is.. it dosnt quite do what he thinks it should do..

i tell him its perfectly normal and nothing wrong with it.. he dosnt believe me.. well thats his perogative.. but its a shame cos there isnt anything wrong with his grfx card..

what we have is a game called oblivion.. this game can bring even his fastest system down to unacceptable frame rates.. this is just a fact.. why dosnt he just except this fact..

seek now says he can get frame rates above 35 fps in the bad forested areas.. well yes.. it dosnt sound very good but for oblivion it is.. i have achieved lows of 13 fps when i was playing with oblivion settings.. with a similar system to seek i still see lows of 20fps in the grass.forested areas.. its normal..

seek is quite simply expecting more from his expensive grfx card than it can deliver.. there is nothing wrong with it.. there is nothing wrong with his cpu..

but without wishing to cause seek any offense at all.. the problem really is with him not his system.. the problem is he thinks his system should perform better than it is capable of performing with a game like oblivion..

now if i can bluntly point this out and save him going out and wasting vast quanities of money trying to achieve the impossible.. personally i think i have done the guy a favour..

and infrared.. i do have a problem with misinformation.. i see it put out and believed far too often.. this is a nice forum.. but again a lot of what is posted here is misinformation..

if i appear to sometimes be "mean" to people who post misinformation by simply contradicting it.. i cant really help it.. except by letting it spread..

u wanna ban me dude go ahead and do it.. i can live with that.. he he he..

some more misinformation.. posted with good intent.. this wont help in the slightest.. in fact it will do the opposite to help.. it will hinder.. hdr and aa together with cause a performance hit.. give more eye candy but less fps.. with a game like oblivion more eye candy is the last thing we need..

no offence intended megatron.. hope u didnt take any..
