Hey.

what can i benefit from overclocking my cpu and gpu ?

AMD Phenom(tm) II X6 1100T Processor, 3300 Mhz, 6 core
Kuhler H2o 620 Water cooler

XFX Radeon R9 270X 2GB GDDR5, cooled by orginal 3 fans

I do have AMD catalyst control center.
If i was going to OC how much should i raise, wich test should i run
Will it tear down cpu/gpu over time, how much does it shorten the liftime of it.

Thanks for any answears/help i'm getting.

Hi

Are your system specs up to date? "Windows 8 professional 32bit"! Crucial DDR3 BallistiX Sport 1600MHz 16GB (4GB4) [*If yes]
*may want to backup all mission critical data and install a 64-bit OS to take advantage of the 16GB of RAM

Question - what is monitor resolution?
Question - what is primary use of the system?
Answering these questions will help other members of the TPU community to assist further

what can i benefit from overclocking my cpu and gpu ?
General Info
Overclocking is a useful tool to attain higher minimum fps in CPU/GPU software engines that are poorly optimised/un-optimised by developers or to run higher resolutions at playable fps. [in some professional applications OC can increase rendering session completion times]
Note: if games run as intended there is little point in overclocking

AMD Phenom(tm) II X6 1100T Processor, 3300 Mhz, 6 core
Kuhler H2o 620 Water cooler
Overclocking AMD Phenom ; will need another member of the community to chip in with regard to this

I do have AMD catalyst control center.
Keep in mind - that all hardware is different due to the wafer fabrication process
[General Rule of Thumb]
Use MSI Afterburner Software's or Other to find out the max OC
increase 5~10Mhz on core in stages test at each stage, if the system freezes you have gone to far, lower the OC by 40Mhz and then start the same process with the MEM increase 5~10Mhz once you get artefacts back the OC down by 40Mhz; Use GPU-Z to keep an eye on VRM Temps these can rise quickly when OC's are applied Keep these between 70~80c : 85c Max]
-Adjust vga card fan speed manually
-Be aware that some games do not like OC's and testing with each game as well as benchmarks is necessary
-Coolers differ [while one card may cope well with heat the other may not; Place the cooler card at the bottom when in crossfireX]
-Make sure the OC is synchronised, most third party OC software will allow for this
-Make sure the drivers are stable; if they are unstable they will crash the OC
-Check that the motherboard is setup and chipset drivers are up to date [Run CPU and MEM at default speeds while testing vga card OC]

Will it tear down cpu/gpu over time, how much does it shorten the liftime of it.
If at all concerned with this; overclocking is not the way forward.
Hardware starts to degrade from the moment it is used; in most cases if upgrading hardware on a regular bases once every six to twelve months it will not be an issue.
If on a limited upgrade path say three to five years then there may be an issues with hardware that has been overclocked for a long period of time [*depending on usage and quality of the CPU /GPU fabrication and binning process] there are not guarantees with OC

i used to start by 10% higher clock than stock then test it
and yes, oc would affect your hardware for long term since you push the hardware and depends on the hardware itself
some may get better result than other for the same setting

Your GPU will show benefit with an OC for sure. I had 2 of them at one time.

Well as far as the CPU goes, if you OC it, it will give the more performance of a stronger CPU. Say you OC'ed to 3.8GHz, you would basically have the same performance out of your current CPU that you would get by buying a FX6200. Same goes for the GPU. With OC'ing, your 270X can give the performance of a 280, or maybe even a 280X. The best part is that those performance gain come free.

As for OC'ing hurting the CPU or GPU, keep it within thermal and voltage limitations set by the manufacturer, and there will be little to no affect on the life of the hardware.

Glad to finally see that machine working after all the mishaps :toast:

overclocking is free performance, fun as hell and doesn't really degrade the hardware if done the right way :)

hehe, you say something there :)

Waiting for memory now, then i'm gonna start OC i think.

rigth about that.

to use that 16gb of ram you will have to install 64 bit windows otherwise you will be capped at 3gb. and for those games you don't need to overclock your system. If you start playing BF4 and other more demanding games on the other hand, overclock to hell and back :)
