The one you have LOL. just use Trix by Sapphire. If anything is locked, it can be unlocked with a registry fix.

    Reasons to flash bios:
Unlocking shaders, but you can't do that with any recent card but the 6950.

Why do you need new bios?

If its a reference 6970 its a fairly safe thing to do...if its not reference its probably not a good idea....

You can set a fan curve with trixx or msi afterburner.

Try RBE. Make your own custom fan profile then save the bios and flash it. Thats what i did on stock cooling. I also reduced the volts a bit on full load so it wouldnt get so hot. Cheers.

Then tell him that if he really notices a difference then his computer is crap because Afterburner barely uses any memory or CPU (unless you record video).

You can go ahead and flash his BIOS, but I think he will be even more pissed if he doesn't have a video card to use to open those games. :p

Leave it alone, introduce him to Afterburner, and if him complains just tell him you could try ruining his video card instead. :)

Or he lives in late 90's when you had to do that sort of thing.

    As others have said, no.

Really how is your 6970 dead You do know it has a secondary stock non flash-able bios on it right.Set the switch on it by the crossfire fingers to 2 it should boot for you to re-flash the bios back in it.;)

If that switch is not there then it is a non-reference board.

Try reading this......It is for 6950 to 6970 but it shows the bios switch.......and explains how to use it to re-flash.

    http://www.techpowerup.com/articles/overclocking/159

Also try this bios section to re un-dead your card,Just always leave the stock bios on your cards alone unless you really know what your doing.

If his card has that little switch then flash away LOL....
I've used RBE to alter the BIOS of my card a few different ways and the fan setting is fairly simple...
At the same time I have a 6950 unlocked to 6970 speeds, overvolted and the fan is revved up with higher than normal clocks on both the memory and the core....

I'm fairly certain I'm sending my card to an early death but its all good imo....LOL
I'm sure once I go to upgrade the card I'm gonna kill it going for some stupid benchmark....
