Is anyone aware of any credible test of free antivirus programs from not more than year ago?

How does panda outrank bitdefender - the only advantage it seems to have is that one additional lab tested the software.

I have always used Avast. Right now, I am using Kaspersky. When the subscription expires, I will go back to Avast. Then again, I might be a little adventurous and try out Norton since I get it free from Comcast

Good Question. I've used BitDefender Free on my HTPC for over a year, and it's the most unobtrusive antivirus I have ever seen! It's so easy to use that it is literally the one you recommend to a totally clueless non-techy friend or relative!

I use Avast! Pro on my rig and have for about 8 years now. Very satisfied with it as well..

I switched from Avira to Kaspersky a year or two ago and it seems to work pretty well although Malwarebytes (paid version) seems to catch a lot of PUP's (potentially unwanted programs) that Kaspersky misses.

Honestly I still feel a solution like MSE/Defender + MBAM Free is the way to go. Manually scan MBAM weekly, leave MSE to auto-run in the background. Should be good-to-go, sure it's not the most secure solution on the MSE-side, but it's also not going to consume more resources than it should in my experience.

If you need more than that, there are plenty of free options like AVG 2015, Bitdefender, Avast (meh), Kaspersky is pretty good. I run MBAM premium and it's really good too, but most users only need Free if they can manage remembering scanning their systems, or install a script to do so for you. Keep it simple here, be consistent and you'll keep your PC clean. :)

The thing I really like about BitDefender Free is it literally is install and forget. Low resource usage, quiet scanning a bit at a time when computer usage is low, background updates, and a very intelligent scanner with low false positives.

I've never used an antivirus...and I've never had one. A little malware, but no viruses. I keep ADWCleaner, MBAM, and RKill around just in case, but haven't needed them in years. The antivirus software packages I've tried dug into the resources of my pc and I could feel a definite slowdown...I already have slow pc's, I don't need them hindered further.

I have my own preferences for A/V and Malware...

However, Octopuss, I would give this advice to answer your question of ""Best" free antivirus?".

First look at something like AV Comparatives or some other recent test.
Pick out the top four or five you like...download them.
Test them one at a time to see how they effect your system/OS.
Browse their forums to see if others are having any compatibility/install or un-install problems, etc.
Chose the one you like best and that does the least of a performance hit on your system...
Now you have your A/V.

NOW the best advice... whatever one you end up with... Make sure you have some type of backup, as this is the best defense.

My backups have save me a few times.

Thanks - bookmarked the site. I don't generally review what a/v I'm using unless I notice a problem of some sort but I think I'm going to get in the habit of checking this site periodically.

I know what he meant. That's why I told him about Avast. The Norton part was just additional info. Most ISP offers free AV's. Who knows if they expire if or when a customer terminate their service. Avast or Avira in my opinion is his best bet

I don't use any antivirus and haven't for... over 10 years or something. I will buy something (ESET Smart Security) this year though, because I got more careful and paranoid with age, and I think I might have gotten infected with something weird year ago and it didn't go away until I wiped system partition clean despite all tests with all kinds of tools coming up negative.

This is not for myself though. I sometimes fix someone's PC, reinstall, build or whatever, and while I am pretty damn far from being even remotely close to being an IT expert, there are much, much more illiterate users out there. For such cases, I need something free that's at least half decent at protecting against the usual crap.
I intentionally put best in quotes, because it's pretty subjective. Also, see how many links were already presented with a handful of replies? How do I tell which site is credible and doesn't actually post content someone paid to be put up?

If your that concerned just use Kasperski. Pay the money its only $20 for 3 PCs Newegg or Amazon

But MCE is fine. Viruses are really not the issue these days anyway

thats a virus actally... malware

I do not particularly like Comodo; however, if you are going to make that statement, you need to qualify it.

Comodo is not malware. I, personally, have used the latest version for testing purposes and found no malware, pups, or other.

I installed that Avira thing based on some of the reviews or whatever. Man is that a shit or what. I admit 512MB RAM is not awesome even for XP, but on a cleanly installed system with nothing running, it should be ok. Well this piece of shit completely killed the system. It took about a full hour after the installation before I could interact with anything, and even then it was constant swapping. Uninstalling it took like 20 minutes too. It's also like 500MB+ and opens some crap in the browser every time you touch it. Jesus!!!
Talk about malware...

just use bitdefender basic, it's not that advanced but i've been using it on my home server for over a year now and it's caused no problems and done well to detect viruses
