I played a few good old arcade games the other day (literally arcade games) and picked up Streets of Rage on Steam the other day hoping to play it via internet with another friend as the 2p but unfortunately the multiplayer/coop aspect is local-only meaning I needed him there at my keyboard to mash the buttons.

I did a little research and found that there's a few NES/SNES emulators and such that support play over Net Play. (don't want to discuss emus, roms, or anything of that nature in this post)

My question is - what were your favorite multiplayer side-scrolling combat games for the NES and SNES? Were there any decent ones for the Sega, N64 or more recent systems?

(Think King of Dragons, Contra, and some of the old TNMT side scrolling arcade games.)

Contra was addictive. Played a lot of turtles 2 as well. Whenever I was at a friend of mine streets of rage had to be played. Oh, and Golden Axe.

Kaillera is wat you're looking for though.

    Skate or Die!

Rodney Dangerfield was the skate shop owner in the game. Fun game too.

I think Skate or Die 2 was more "combat" oriented.

Strider, Shinobi, Vectorman, Comix Zone, Final Fight One, River City Ransom, X-Men Arcade, Golden Axe, Altered Beast, Gradius, Ghosts N' Goblins, Rolling Thunder. I can't remember if some of these have 2 player or alternating 2 player but they are great games nonetheless.

Sonic 2 was actually pretty fun, racing each other to the end of the level.

What no Akari Warriors or Two crude dudes?

I'd rather punch my nuts off then play that game again.

lol we tried contra wars III last night and ragequit after about a dozen attempts on the first level... I have no idea why it was so hard - maybe our controls weren't set up optimally or something

Ninja Gaiden is another hard one. Microsoft had to fly a developer in from Japan to complete Ninja Gaiden Black (XBOX) to see if it was humanly possible.

What do you all know about Secret of Mana?!?! Many of summer vacation days were lost with that.

I know its not like Contra or that but still! it was a great game for three players at the time!

So was Seiken Densetsu 3 (I personally thought it was better), but I'm pretty sure that's not what he wants.
