room temp is ~60F but the case is wide open while I set everything up. Oddly enough the MB temp was 20C while the CPU was at 13C

That isn't possible. 13C would be about 55C, I doubt it is that cold in your room and there is no way to cooler lower than ambient with just a blue orb II. Most likely just a sensor giving an inaccurate reading. Once you are in Windows try running Core Temp or Intel TAT and see what it reads.

I'd actually bet that it is closer to 55C - the setup is in my basement while I get it all put together

having spent the last 15m down there I can say it's quite chilly indeed.

in my room? not everyone here is a pimply teenager

Ok so here it is. The Thermaltake Blue Orb II. I'm happier with the surface on this cooler. It's much straighter then the BT was. It only took 2 min on the 1200 grit to be able to see there were no low or high spots and a quick buff with the polish gave immediate results. I will have the temps shortly. I know that's what your all waiting for. :) I have high hopes for it. The slug in the center is huge and it will take some time for it to saturate with heat. If the fins can wick it away fast enough it should perform better. Now I can imagine a higher CFM fan could benifit this cooler. I'll be back...

Well it's pretty (see pic) :) but after 10 min of prime95 the CPU hit 71deg (from 63c). Idle went up from 38c to 41c. The interesting thing is the fins barely feel warm. Maybe the aluminum isn't such a good conductor. I'm going to remove and reapply the thermal compound to eliminate that. On the bright side it's pretty quiet and somewhat lower in profile then the likes of the BT or the Scythe towers. This might be a good choice for a home theater pc. On the D975XBX2 there's enough clearance for taller memory modules. It comes rather close to the northbridge heatsink (see pic) and the mounting bracket comes close to the regulator heatsinks (see pic) but it does fit. This will get in the way of a fan on the northbridge of the xbx2 but the airflow from the BO2 seems to do a good job keeping it as cool as when I had a fan on it. Well, back to Radioshack with the BlueOrb II and my aircooled quest moves on.

I have had great results with my TT BT. I havent lapped it, but it was pretty even when I got it. Applied AS5 and my temps dropped from like 62C with the stock HSF to around 45C with the BT. Huge Difference. I bet if I cut a hole in the side of my case, perhaps put a fan, grill and filter there, and either had air blowing in or pulling out, I could lower the temps a few more C. To each his own. BTW, the TT Blue Orb 2 is a beautiful cooler.

On a different note, while its a hybrid air cooler, you could go with that TEC cooler on newegg (cant remember the name, its like 140 bucks though)

You can try the CNPS9700. Keeps my E6600 right under 60C under full load and that is at 3.6GHz with 1.36v(real voltage, not BIOS setting) running through it.

I'm currently running orthos on 370fsb. CoreTemp shows 34c/31c @100% load. It's ~57 deg F in my basement atm. I'll keep checking it for stability, bumping up the fsb till I have issues.

I sanded the Blue Orb to 2000grit and lightly buffed w/ a rouge cloth before application. What I don't like is that it seems as though it's bending the mobo without my even tightening the screws much at all.

Damn, I would be freezing if it was that cold in my office. I am lucky if my office gets under 75F.

yep, it's quite chilly down there. My computer seems to like it though! Rest of the house is ~67F

Technically, it's more of a shop than an office. Many more hammers, kilns, lathes and drill presses than computers down there

I didn't knotice anything like that. Take a look at the pic where you can see the regulator heatsinks. There is a motherboard standoff screwed in the center hole of the hsf clips. Does yours have that or was this a revision because of the complaints? I had no problem getting the screws lined up and it didn't tweak the motherboard at all. It does feel secure though. I imagine without those you could get it on but it would be harder. I removed my BO-II and reapplied the AS5 but it's didn't effect the temps. The original application looked find though. Idle temps did calm down to 38c (same as BT). The center of this hsf has a rather large slug in it so it must have retained more heat from booting and I read the temp a few moments after boot. Lucky for me my g/f bought me the Infinity for valentines day. :) Now I guess I'll have to get her that necklace. Entrapment I tell ya!

I'm almost wondering if there's a thermal junction limitation between the cores themselfs and the cpu's outter casing. 63c (or 71c for that matter) is pretty hot. You should be able to feel that without a problem. When I felt the top of the BT's base-plate (the one against the cpu) It just felt warm if anything. My P4ht 550 on the other hand reads 60c and the whole heatsink is quite warm to the touch and the air blowing off it is also very warm. I'm going to pull my e6600 and check the top of the CPU itself for being level. I have a mark resembling a square on the base-plate of the BT like just the edges of the processor were in contact. Tell me this. If this core on the e6600 hit 71c should the air comming off the heatsink be fairly warm? and also the heatsink itself should be pretty toasty.

Welcome to TPU Lazzersgirl.

@Lazzer - Do you think lapping the CPU may help with the temps? If not, I say go water. lol
