Only time I have seen this is when messing with a video card or a driver. Can they boot into safe mode and not get the black screen?

So really it is failing to load Windows , it could be overheating as soon as there is load on the cpu

A good place to start would be to get rid of the dust inside.

Post the specs and a list of what you have tried and what you suspect it mght be
Any error messages flash up ?

Shine a bright light on the screen if the monitor is fooked you may still see an image.
Total guess. this one at least I am honest when i am guessing.

Is there an error message or mouse cursor on the screen. I've seen this issue before...generally a vid driver or corruption. Can you boot into safe mode OK?

What changes have happened prior to this issue?

This used to be a Not-as-rare-as-you-might-think problem with W7. Prev-X had a fix that I used twice, from a command line while in the black screen, even if you could't see what you were typing.

Alas, they are merged with Webroot, and the solution is gone. I will keep looking.

There is a downloadable version, called fixshell, if you can find it. I have used it safely, but it is use at your own risk. I just searched online, and you can find it. That is the product Prev-X made.

Here is a link to the description of the problem, and the solution I described above. See if that applies to you: http://www.lockergnome.com/blade/20...h-got-you-down-try-this-free-tool-from-prevx/

However, the link called for in those commands will not work, but at least you'll know if that is your problem.

Fixshell.exe is even mentioned on MS own site: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...ultimate/c491f6d9-b37d-4da0-9633-5e9d2929bf81

Let me guess :
1/ improper VGA definition (restart your computer in safe mode with VGA support, then set a lower definition such as 1024x768, and reboot normally)
2/ corrupted profil (here's a workaround)
3/ something else
