Boot in 640x480

Recently my computer randomly booted in 640x480 with the lowest colour quality.
I figured it was a driver going bad, so I uninstalled all my Catalyst/ATI software and upgraded to the latest Catalyst Drivers. That fixed the problem.

But only temporarily.
Since then I have had to reinstall the whole driver package over and over again.
I install the drivers (by running the exe) reboot and everything is fine. After a few reboots (3 to 5 restarts) it will go back to 640x480 and 16bit colour and I have to reinstall the drivers...

Anyway, I came home today and it happened again and Im sick of it being a temporary fix rather than working like it should. Last time I installed the drivers I ran DriverCleaner first, but its still booting like this...

What the heck am I doing to cause this?

Nothing wrong with the card itself, it runs under game stress for about 8 hours.
No blue screens or anything like that... its just after a few restarts that it happens.

I reinstalled drivers today, so Ill see how long it lasts.
Dunno about memtest, might try that.

Not running vista btw, uninstalled it - Im on XP Pro.

by boots, I'm going to assume you mean the POST screen, and the Windows XP screen.

edit...

ex_reven, does this also bring you into windows xp @ 640 x 480 @ 16 color?
