This is undoubtedly one of the most bizarre scenarios ever. It involves an ancient PC with an AMD Athlon II X2 B24 and 4GB RAM. My friends and are trying to give it a little boost without spending much money. This means we will not be upgrading the processor or motherboard. We just want to throw in a GPU. There are two choices: A new GTX 750, or a used GTX 590. Each fetch a similar price on ebay. My question is this: if we go for the 590, will the extreme bottlenecking issues negate its higher performance over the 750?

Thanks!

Actually, I see this scenario (with slightly different players) all the time.

That said, these are hugely different cards with typically hugely different prices (under $150 for the GTX750 to $700 for the GTX 590). Are you sure of the model numbers?

If me, and the price for the 590 was right and you know for a fact it works perfectly, I would go for the GTX 590 IF my power supply would support it because I could maybe use it in future builds. But note that is a BIG IF here as the GTX 590 is a very power hungry card. Note the GTX 750 consumes just 55W for the card and has only a 300W minimum PSU recommended. Compare that to the GTX 590 specs where it is 365W  for the card, 700W minimum for the PSU! The GTX 590 also requires two 8-pin supplementary power connectors while the GTX 750 requires none.

So you need to factor in the costs of a new PSU, if one is needed here.

Yes, the pricing is accurate, a used 590 recently (less than 1hr ago) sold for 130 dollars on ebay. And as for the PSU, that is one of the things I am worried about with regard to this card.

Overclocking an AMD Athlon? Is that even possible? :)

simple. get a used GTX 750

GTX590 is too power hungry and is a waste of money

750-800w PSU for the GPU and some CPU ocing.

a 600w solid unit would be fine as the proc is only a 65w part, though I would recommend the OP go with the aforementioned 750 instead of this 590 idea as it will be completely CPU bottlenecked and waste of power in such an older system

And as for the PSU, that is one of the things I am worried about with regard to this card.
Then we need to know the specs of the PSU.

Sadly that will have to wait as the system is not in my home.
