Dear God, no!
AMD stuck with backward compatibility for over 10 years now, and it was great, but now I think it's about time they come out with a completley new socket non-backward compatible. Let's start fresh with Bulldozer and have future faster Bulldozers be compatible with current Bulldozer based mobo's. That is the way forward. Leave the past behind and start fresh is what they should do.

Looks like the rumor has been officially squashed by JF-AMD. However, it seems that the rumors that Bulldozer CPUs will be compatible with the 8xx chipsets is true. However, the board must be designed for the AM3+ CPU in the first place.

Makes sense because Bulldozer is completely different from Phenom II design which will require new chipset.

That's kind of the opposite of what I said. It looks like current 8xx series chipsets will work with Bulldozer, but that their are more differences between AM3 and AM3+ than just the chipset. Most likely how the motherboard handles the power settings of the Bulldozer chips, as well as the newer Turbo Core technology.

so it's power and socket not necessarily chipset incompatibility.

I say it's better this way. they can reuse the older chipsets on enconomy boards and use the new stuff for highend. in any case you're buying a board that's been manufactured to work with am3+ rather than bios flashing an old one.

Gigabyte looks to be getting into the mix. It would seem that black socket AM3 boards might be the Bulldozer compatible ones.

Intel do 1 or 2 chipsets per processor and they are exclusive to a socket compared to AMD where you can still by nforce 520 boards for am3

just shows how Economy minded AMD are, if they can rival i7 series then well have some seriously high perf/$ computers

Isn't that nice? Hey Intel, where's my nForce chipsets at for the i7? Oh wait...

Personally, up until the SB7xx, I couldn't stand AMD/ATI southbridges (and neither could Vista, lol). I was saddened that nVidia didn't really put any work into improving the 780a chipset (which was pretty good, btw), and instead just renamed it. It probably saddened ASUS as well, and that's why the Crosshair III was on an AMD chipset (and by extension, Crosshair IV).

nVidia do a lot of b1tching and moaning about Intel not letting them build chipsets for their processors (and rightly so), but they do nothing for AMD processors when AMD has nothing against it.

The rumors continue to press on. That'd be a hell of a thing if Asus motherboards are forwards compatible. It even shows that older 7xx chipsets (read: not motherboards) are Bulldozer compatible!

Still, this is certainly a reason to upgrade.
