I always bought my pc games locally from Best Buy and CompUSA but CompUSA closed and Best Buy has a real krappy selection. I have even found a few at WalMart but not many good ones.

When a new game comes out, IF these stores have a PC version, it is usually sold out the first day if it's a hot game. They always have a good selection of console games, but not pc games. PSP and Xbox games are in abundance.
WHY IS THAT???? It must not be profitable for these stores to carry much for pcs.

No one at the store could answer that question for me.

So, where do you guys buy your games? Online?
I don't want to d/l games, I want a hard copy CD in my hands.

Is Tiger Direct or NewEgg the place to buy from?
I know Battlefield 2 is coming out real soon and I want a hard copy.

I bought The Orange Box at Best Buy and COD4, Team Fortress Classic, and Half Life 2 Deathmatch from Steam. I'll probably just stick to Steam for now, unless someone happens to be running a better deal by the time I decide to buy MW2.

I'm also a fan of cases and disks. Some stuff don't have psysical disks (like the latest EU3 expansion), but I try to get them where possible. Amazon is pretty good.

You should just look on Google shopping and see who's got the best deals for the games you want.

    Thanks for the input.

Ok, I did go to Game Stop yesterday and found (2) games I've been wanting. I got Dirt 2 and Need for Speed SHIFT.

I was glad they had these games as everyone else locally was out of stock.

They did not have a large selection of pc games but at least they had the (2) I wanted.

I guess I just don't understand WHY the stores don't cater to the pc users, but they do cater to the console users.

It has to be sales...everything is market driven, for profit.

I think I am answering my own question here.

The funny thing for me is...I have a friend with a Play Station 3 and I watched him play COD on it, I wasn't impressed at all.

The graphics sucked compared to my pc. And I'll take a keyboard any day over a hand held device.

I'd like to play him console vs. pc, but I know thats not possible. And I'd romp him and he knows it.

it's not that hard to grasp. there are a LOT of PC gamers but not in the common market(us/uk). in 90% of areas consoles sell better, simple. therefore it would be silly for walmart, gamestop, anywhere to keep a comparable selection of PC games to console games, they just don't sell.

keep in mind with steam, ea store, d2d - it is legal to burn a backup of your disc. you also get a serial. there is your hard copy. with steam there is the offline mode fiasco, which hopefully will be fixed soon but the others there is no issue.

I can understand the wanting store-bought discs, but tbh they are a pita, and hard to find on release. if you want current release games you have to order online and wait for shipping, or get digital versions.

Uhh...it's pretty simple why the console game selection is much better than the PC game selection in stores...that's where the money is. Other than WoW, PC gaming isn't doing that great at the moment. I suspect you'll have to give up on your physical copy rule soon--digital downloads are quickly becoming the the norm for PC owners as PC games struggle for shelf space with the console titles.

I'm not a PC game hater, but that's just the way things are at the moment, and it doesn't look like they are going to turn around any time soon. In fact, I suspect that when some bright game developer finally realizes that all they need to do to suck lots more PC gamers to the consoles is support mouse/keyboard control in their game, PC gaming will really be up against the wall.

If you don't like steam \ D2D which neither gave me any issue. Try http://www.gogamer.com/ or even newegg some times.

Used to, but they are now all Gamestop and their selection of PC games is shrinking by the day.

I miss Babbage's. When I first got into computer gaming, they carried everything I was interested in. I order my games on steam now but only because I don't want to pay for international shipping. When (if) I ever move back to the US, I will probably order my games through Newegg.

I think what we are all lamenting is not the name of the store or it's policies, but the fact we all grew up in the heyday of PC games and that their heyday is now over. I suspect the PC games market will be the David instead of the Goliath from this point on--don't see that changing unless something drastic happens like Sony, MS, and Nintendo all decide to raise their fees for gaming on the Internet.
