Hey guys, my situation is that I want to transfer media files etc. from my old computer to my new computer, and I have looked into getting a external harddrive as a medium to transfer from old to new
(since I was going to get one anyways).

Well on reading reviews, it is too damn expensive imo for something that is quite unreliable!

I'm looked around, and Im confused on what cable I need to connect both computers directly
e.g can you do USB - USB, or do I need something else (I think I read about a null serial modem cable)
What damn cable should I purchase?

Both computers are XP so I should be able to use the file transfer wizard but im stuck on the important bit :p

Thanx for any help in advance :)

Hook up both computers and just create a LAN network and you only need a CAT5 cable.;)

Networking sounds like a good idea, though I guess I will need to research that when I have time, I have usb sticks, but the files altogether that I want to transfer are 100gb+

A task I'm not prepared to do :p

it is really simple, especially if the old pc has a network socket already, you just have to (connect a cable, then) run the 'set up a home or small office network' (a few mouse clicks) and youre done

Remember you will need a Crossover CatV cable if going from PC > PC. Otherwise you will need a hub/switch.

get a CAT5e crossover, they range from 4us to 200us depending on length and it comes in quite handy if you dont have a router and a buddy comes over with his rig

i forgot about crossover cables, unlikely you'll need one, as far as im aware all newer network sockets have auto switching (every mobo ive had since nforce2 has)

i also forgot to mention the quickest way, which is to just plug the old pc's hard drive into the new pc, just make sure to check the boot sequence in bios is still set to the new pc's hard drive (and that the jumpers are set correctly if the old drives ide)

OMG. I have never met anyone who actually bought one of those file transfer things.

Firewire will do the same as USB, but faster, so will a cheap crossover cable. I can wlak you through the steps of moving data so you will not miss a beat.

Anything more than $10 to buy a cable is too much.

Agree with you there. You already have firewire why not use it?

Anything more than $10 to buy a cable is too much.
Again agree with you. Firewire is still cheaper!

So either go firewire or a crossover cable.:rockout:

We are not wiring a house. The person needs a short crossover cable to connect the two. Or a firewire cable to connect them. Or to move the disk(s) to the new computer.

I was just making a comment that spending more than 10 bucks on a cable makes sense

Okay.. well lots of suggestions.
1. Get a crossover cable - Okay, well I'm not at home and thats a problem since I do not know what the old computer has, I know it has USB and firewire, (the USB being dodgy as well since it is old and now likes to disconnect during file transfer with any usb device! E.g changing music on MP3 or putting files onto a USB pendrive.. it likes to drop randomly. :() The firewire on the old computer - it does have a port - however I've never used it and there's like to be a bag load of dust in there :(

2. Putting old harddrive into new computer - I will have a lot of problems with that due to it being IDE - not to mention my power source won't be able to plug into all of them - i also do not have enough adapters - not to mention two of the old drives are in raid 0.
Therefore I will not attempt this simply because it is too high risk for me.+ It is going to be used by another member of the family etc.
(Not experienced enough plus I'm worried about all the data corrupting lol but the main problem is the power cables..)
3.

This tool got so many high praises of being the fastest transfer tool out there. You plug it via usb between to machines, and its built in software will load and drag n drop.

edit: more info...http://www.thetornado.com/tornado-about.asp

That looks great .. if I wanted everything from the old drive :) But it's too expensive for what I would like to do :(

I am buying a router (just as a coincidence with the cable) this weekend, are there any firewire for a UK based person to be found for PC-PC?

Sorry for the long post, I just know I can end up with multiple problems due the nature of my old comptuer but I would like those damn files :d

Thanks again guys!

if you try on usb it will take a week to do it, its slow as chit.

plug eithernet cable into each computer to link them and it will be able to transfer pretty fast but using firewire is the fastest way.

Firewire.

Plug it from one firewire port to the other. Let windows run the network setup wizard. Transfer your files.

Done.

if both computers will be hooked to the same internet connection through the router then that is your connection. simply go to your old computer and enable file sharing through your LAN - Local Area Network and from your new computer you will see the old computer shown on your network. simply click through your old computer just as though you were sitting in front of it then copy the wanted files over to your new coputer. thats it your done! but dont forget to turn off file sharing after your finished so no one can access your files unless you authorize it. this method transfers files very quickly and needs no extra cables except the ones to connect to the router.
