throw a hybrid physx card in their and see how metro runs , maxd 5870's xfired and at1000 core do well 40-50 fps max IQ ,with a physx boost so the same would apply to 7970's, i got a cheap gt240 for that(52 quids), but batman AC is pushing me towards a 560 soon,:)

and thats ultra settings + morpho AA + physx high

if you want optimal fps on a single monitor al lyou need is 1 extreme high end card and a stripped OS, if you get low fps with an HD7970 you obviously dont have an efficient OS resource setup, me being a SysOP and server owner i know how to get the most out of my pc with less resources, i still use a pentium 4 HT 3.4, 2GB DDR1 ram for my game server haha.... if your playing a game check your task manager if it says anything over 40 processes you run an inefficient OS (windows)

this includes disabling all features in add/remove all programs, even if its a clean install its not a resourceful setup

I got an HD 7970 and i will still drop frames (below 60 FPS) on BF3 multiplayer when the shit really hits the fan...especially on the B2K maps. I have shadows set only to HIGH and have no MSAA. I also constantly monitor resource performance on my keyboard LCD and see when my gfx card is at 99% resource use (so the dropped frames in BF3 aint entirely to do with CPU being maxed). Since I game at 1650*1080, I would suggest that a single HD7970 would not max out ALL GAMES at 2560*1600. CF HD7970's would easily nail it though.

Of course, there are always examples of games that wouldn't be 'maxed' out, but that is always down to poor optimisation, Metro 2033 being a classic example of a game which doesn't look at all impressive yet brings gfx cards to thier knees.

Since the op already has a GTX 680, I really dont understand what his attractions to the HD 7970's might be. Obvioulsy the GTX 680 is the better card of the two. Even when both of the cards are overclocked to thier top potential (and the HD 7970s are sold massively 'underclocked'), and the performance between the two become negligible, the GTX 680 is smaller, quieter, and consumes markedly less power.

You know Frick, you should seriously considering changing that F into a P. You're approaching d.d.d. levels already.

ABUSE!

I game at 2560x1440 with a Powercolor LCS 7970 (admittedly at 1125 core with stock volts). I tried all ultra, HBAO off (makes very little visual difference) and no AA and was getting 80-100fps in multiplayer.

With the same on 2xAA I still hover range 50-80fps.

With your resolution it should be far higher?

I neglected to mention that I game with V-synch on at all times. To me, having V-synch enabled goes without saying and I really dont understand why anyone would play games with it disabled. But to clarify, most of the time in BF3 multiplayer, I get a solid 60 FPS on my 60Hz LCD monitor. However, sometimes when the shit really hits the fan and/or when I have a huge vista of the active battlefield, I can drop to 50-55FPS. If I had v-sync disabled, then I too would mostly clock between 80-100 FPS.

I too have my HD 7970 O/Cd to 1125 MHz.

HBAO 'off' is interesting. I have never tried turning that off but I know it resulted in a big performance hit in BFBC2. I am now thinking that perhaps killing HBAO in favour of some MSAA might be a good trade for me.

I was just browsing this thread and read this. I don't see a thanks from an admin on that post. Just from a member. Yes that post is a bit abusive, yet I didn't see anyone report the post. Half of keeping TPU under control is up to the members. If you see a post that goes against TPU's guidelines, report it and we'll take care of it.

Thank you.

Speaking of 7970s and abuse, I read something abusive in a review that I would like to report:

"[...] If you play your games at 1280x1024 then the 2600K and 3960X totally rape and annihilate any AMD processor. Interestingly enough, the Dual-core Core i6 661 was slowest. [...]"

Specifically - the use of the word "totally" is offensively redundant there, as one cannot PARTIALLY rape and annihilate...

So true. Like the line from somewhere, "I'm going to kill you until you are dead!"

Yes indeed.

To clarify to everyone, I'm not an 'admin' of any sort on TPU and never have been. I'm just an ordinary* member on TPU. I used to do the news a while back and my name showed up in purple, which is probably what matthecat is thinking of. However, elsewhere, I'm somewhat more than a regular member, plus still write the news... :)

EDIT: And frankly I'm offended at the notion I'm like DDD. I'm WAAYY more irrational than he can ever hope to be.

 This has to be the best edit I've seen in a while. Well worth a thanks. :)

To everyone: yes, erocker is right as usual. Just hit the report button if you think a post is out of line.

*There's nothing 'ordinary' about this quantum realm I seem to inhabit...
