I just read on a review a second ago that the Saphire X800 GTO video card can come with one of two cores. 1. being the R430 and 2. being the R480. I knew that part already.

The part I didn't quite get before was that they said that the R430 core is the only one that is unlockable from 12 to 16 pipes by way of a BIOS flash but that they clock up terribly.

Then I heard that the R480 core is locked at 12 pipes but can overclock really great.

I guess what I want to know is of the two default choices, which is better to have? Would you want 16 pipes and no overclock or 12 pipes and a hell of a overclock?

Confirm also that the R480 core can't be unlocked from 12 to 16 pipes and overclocked too.

    Thanks!

I never heard that the R480 couldnt unlock, i thought it would be better to unlock seeing as its a later core (dnt quote me on this, im not too sure)

Well, ill say what i think. If the R480 CANT unlcok, id say get the R430. Reason being, the 4 extra pipes give a 20-25% increase in performance, far better than an OC.

I got the X800 PRO with R420 core. I can get my memory up to 610 Mhz ;) (uses 1.6ns mem, i guess i was lucky to get 1.6 on a PRO)

With the core, i cant OC over 540, but still, 540 is heaps. Also, the R430 will go over 540 cus its a better core.

See the core doesnt affect the memory OC (i dnt think so anyways), so if you get R480, u would be able to get the core up to 610ish but only 12 pipes. If u get R430, you can get the 16 pipes :) and the same memory OC ;)
