computer freezes on start up

Hi,

I am trying to fix a computer and would appreciate any suggestions of help.

I start the computer, it loads, gets to the windows screen, the blue segmented line goes across a couple of times then the whole thing freezes in that spot, the blue line stops moving and that's as far as it gets.

Things I tried:
F8 - safe mode
- last known good configuration
- Start Windows normally
- (etc)
When I tried these it just came back to the F8 screen.

Pushing 'R' didn't do anything (I was told this could make a repair) o.0 ??

Tried to boot up from an operating system disk by changing the boot up menu (delete) and this didn't work either. All it did was get to the windows screen and the blue line moved across a couple of times and it froze again in that spot.. exactly the same as when I try to start it.

I am clueless now as to how to get this computer working. Any ideas?

have you tried doing a repair/reinstall from the windows disk?

you havent given much info here, you haven't told us what version of windows or any specs from the PC, let alone the more detailed stuff such as what programs or drivers were installed prior to the system failing

re comp

I thought I could do a repair from the systems disk but it wont load.

I am not to familiar with this computer. It is nothing special but is used and needed by my husbands friend and his daughter.

I am just trying to help out get it going again.

If this helps?

if a repair install wont work, you may need to back up all the files and do a fresh install of windows (and then put the files back)

if that doesnt work, the problems hardware related and we'll need to diagnose what hardware is causing the problems (likely to be hard drive related, CPU/ram etc tend to crash at different places, not the same spot over and over)

perhaps try to boot from a usb drive you installed Windows on?

If your giving the PC to another person.
I would recommend doing a new install of windows anyway.
That would be your best bet.

Either something isn't jelling with startup, or a hardware conflict is happening. Is it overclocked at all, any part (ram, cpu, gpu, nb, etc)? If so try going back to default. I had a problem with Vista not loading and had to do a repair from the install disc. It should load up unless there is a corrupt boot loader file.

it almost sounds like the issues you get when you move a HDD with XP on it, to another PC with a different IDE/sata controller.

Hi guys and thank you. The computer is a desktop and kinda old looking.. I mean.. it's that beigey color and 'chunky'. It is windows xp and I tried booting from the disk but it wouldn't do that..

When you say back up the data on the hard drive .. do you mean slave it up to another computer (oh how I hate doing that) or is there another way?

(is the original hard drive that came with the computer when this guy bought it)

(how do I go back to default?)

Try useing windows restore and go back to a earler date.
Go to properties or start menu and look for windows restore.
Then when you get it started go back to the earlest date you can flip back threw and restore it there.
Could possible work.

Hi Asylum.. There is no start up.. as I mentioned, it just gets to the windows logo screen, and the blue segmented line moves across a couple of times and the computer freezes... the blue line stops moving.. almost like a screen print.. It's frozen.

My hubby rang his mate and he said he had some disks that came with the computer so when he goes to work today he will collect them and bring them home and I will pester you all some more.. if that's ok?

Back in the day.. lol... I thought I was soooooo smart letting some people know I could fix their computer.. and I did.. and they worked.. and another.. and another... and another... and some laptops... """" What was I thinking!! """"

Thanks for all your help hey guys.. I know that when people get their computers back and they work they are really appreciative.. and I do have a brag about the help I get from you geniuses and without your advice the computer would probably be thrown on a heap somewhere.. lol :)

but is there anything valuable on the Hard Drive? If not a full reinstall with the CD we made should do just fine :)

As luck would have it.. My hubby rang his mate who had to disks that come with the computer. It is nearly Thursday night here now and I have been out all day when I should have been in bed getting well. There is so much on the go at the moment.

I (at some point tomorrow) am going to go over the answers I have received thus far in regards to this thread and my other regarding my husbands desktop he beat up.

I have to say that you have all been very very cool and helpful.. I appreciate it and it's great when I have the time to tackle this stuff because I learn so much.. I don't really like fixing computers but you have to help out where you can and you guys make it much much easier and a little fun. Because some of you are funny lol.

Thank you all hey.

:)

Hi everyone.. am back on my feet somewhat and trying to get this computer out of my house.. functioning hopefully.

Still the same problem. Have set to default.. nothing. Have tried to boot from disk.. nothing.. just the same things.. blue line goes across a couple of times then freezes..

Took battery out for 10 or so minutes.. nothing... Tried the boot up disk windows xp.. nothing.. motherboard disk.... nothing....

Don't know what else to try..

It gets to the point where it begins to load.. Windows comes up.. the logo etc.. the segmented blue line goes across a couple of times and then it freezes.... completely..

What should I do now?

Thanks hey :)

oh... not at all? F-key and then you put the CD first and use the XP CD you used last time and it still doesn't work? what happens exactly when it boots from the disk... freezes? this may be hardware related then, which means harder to fix :( did you try with 1 stick of RAM and the such?

F-Key ?

What I did was set the computer to boot from the disk. However, the computer continues to boot to that area of windows and then freeze.

I have tried both DVD drives.. F-key means ? exactly?

You did change the boot up menu to put your DVD drive 1st right? Its just usually you have to press F12 F2 F3 or something like that, it may be another key in your case... Because it is suppose to boot from the disk and not the OS

alright, I gtg, but will do research on your problem later, so I'll probably have an answer in 48-72 hours or so... atm, I studied way to much for my 2 exams , 1 tomorrow, one after tomorrow, so I'm dead tired
