O.K So, I'm OC'ing and I'm checking my temperatures...

Gigabyte's Easy Tune 5 monitor says that my cpu is running at 4x degrees celcius, although, when i turn on everest both temperature readings drop down to 15-20c...

Which one should i rely on...15-20c seems strangely cool to me but then I wouldnt know

My cpu is an amd 4600+ (65w), and I'm using stock cooling...

Some assistance please?

I dont know about your ambient temps, or your system . Even if it AM2 15-20 is way cool, I'd think OC'd 40's is more realistic. Even in my room with AC on ,I hit low 20's idle on my 939,so to be at 15-20 its possible but you would be shivering as you type!

Try using Core temp or Intel TAT (although TAT usually gives a reading that is slightly off).

I don't know much about AMD's but a general rule of thumb is that if your core temperature as read is lower than your ambient/room temperature then it is not being read correctly.

This holds true for both air-cooled and water-cooled systems. WC ones attain a lower temperature than air-cooled, but you can never get a core temperature lower than your room temperature unless you're using some means to get the water itself at a temperature lower than room temperature.

Speaking of my system, the BIOS quotes a temperature of 30, ASUS Probe says 32, Everest Ultimate says 34 and CoreTemp 0.95 says 42 degrees.

My room temperature is 32 degrees now (hot I know - it was 38 last week!) and hence I can safely conclude that it's CoreTemp 0.95 which is quoting me the correct temperature.

However I'm speaking for an oc'd C2D...

It might help people give you better replies if you input your specs so that we can just click under your avatar and see what you have.

My Everest and CoreTemp surely don't concur. Everest surely isn't right since it's quoting core temperatures lower than my room temperature.

Use speed fan and core-temp and see what you get.

42C for an OC'd C2D... makes me worry about my undervolted, stock speed E6400 that idles at 41C :(

Ummm sorry to hijack this thread and not to alarm you but I think you should take care and maybe re-seat your heat-sink and apply better thermal paste. My rig idles at 42/43 right now and it's nothing worth boasting about, but only perhaps excused when I mention that my current room temperature is 32 degrees..

When my room temperature was 22 degrees it used to idle at 32/34 then as summer got worse and my room temperature increased so did the core temperatures. At a room temperature of 38 once I got idle temperatures of 49/50. Hideous I know but that temperature was a one-off heat-wave which hopefully wouldn't be repeating itself.

Im sorry but, were you talking to me? or anticlutch

Sorry for not explaining myself properly but I was talking to anticlutch (that's why I excused myself for sort of hijacking the thread)

I wouldn't worry much about your 40+ idle temperature since your rig is oc'd and since it's AMD (which I think run hotter than intel?) but I'd worry for an UNDERvolted stock speed E6400 C2D idling at 40+ at room temperatures probably much lower than mine.

Apologies for the confusion!

No problem, no problem, I was just wondering thats all...

Since this was my first build I wouldn't be surprised if I did something wrong...But then, gave my computer 3-4 blood sacrifices so it shouldn't be blood hungry anymore! (A cut actually got half a centimeter into my middle finger)

Lol I remember the first time I cut my fingers on RAM sticks - I didn't even notice at first... I was like what's this gooey stuff (aka blood) and from which part of the RAM is it oozing out of!

How did u cut urself on ram sticks o_O....I cut myself using extensive force to remove and prepare my case, this case is blood hungry I tell you...

Never buy the Sigma Luna case unless you have blood to spare, and a few hours of your time prying, sanding, and cutting.

Well since you want to know I was working on another pc for which I had been suspecting wrong RAM (it had been originally) but which had in fact been a faulty mobo. After the umpteenth time of inserting different RAM modules, I had been stupidly running my fingers along their length applying some force, to make sure they were properly clicked in... And well you can imagine the rest of the story...

They sure do cut if one gets physically obsessed on trying to make a RAM stick work.
Needless to say, blood didn't make any difference - I still had to change the faulty mobo :p
