Consortium is probably the most underrated game in 2014 because it had a really buggy launch. By the end of 2014, the bugs were squished and the game is very enjoyable and very unique. At its heart, it is a first person shooter running on the Source engine but on top of that there are layers and layers of story condensed in to a 2-5 hour package per play (and yes, you'll most likely want to replay it; I'm over 10 I think). As for what makes it unique, Rock, Paper, Shotgun wrote a good article explaining that better than I could.

The lore for these games are extremely deep including a complete alternate reality to what appears in the games. This public wiki skims the surface of it and provides some highlights. You don't need to be familiar with any of this to enjoy the games but if you do some reading on the Information Terminals in the game, you'll realize the rabbit hole goes very deep.

Don't let the cell-shaded look of the game dissuade you. The 9/10 rating on Steam is well deserved.

The second game in the trilogy, Consortium: The Tower Prophecy, is in the works. They're moving from Source to Unreal Engine 4 and they want the game to be even more ambitious than the first. A Kickstarter campaign will be happening some time this year to raise money to continue developing it.

Have you played it recently? A month ago or so they put out what is likely the final patch. I reported all of the bugs I found (there were still quite a few but only one that wasn't cosmetic) and they got them fixed. The game is well polished now.


If you're talking it plays clumsy, I think that's the point. You're controlling a stranger in an environment where everyone is at least familiar with that stranger. This is one of the reasons why it is good to replay. Each time, you'll know a little bit more about the character you're playing as so the experience gets less and less clumsy each time.

Having replayed it so many times, I know enough about everyone in the game to get in or out of trouble but there's still some conversations I've missed because they're buried that well.

I remember the combat beyond the training ground being kinda OK but marginally imbalanced. The content of the game is excellent, but the many MANY months ago that I played it, there were a couple of crashes. Glad to see they've largely fixed it though. I should reinstall and murder everyone.

The Bioware of old were better for sure. (though it could succesfully be argued they were a bit overrated and that Interplay/Black Isle were better at that sort of thing, see Fallout 1/2 and Planescape: Torment and Kotor II but this is getting old now)

DA is post EA. i dont think much of old biowere has left post EA but i could be wrong. i havent follow their development very closely.

UE4 is a much better engine than UE3. They are like night and day, with UE4 being much better.
