I have a "newly bought" CQ40-314TU Laptop (for nearly 4 months) and an installed dual core T3400 CPU installed. Originally, it used a version of BIOS (which I didn't know) for Windows Vista but later, I have the BIOS version F11.C installed for XP. Does this version of BIOS support Core 2 Duo CPUs? I have read the HP's documents and learned that this laptop can have some kinds of C2D CPUs. Will I be able to replace the current CPU with a C2D CPU? Thanks all.

You should be able to upgrade to a t7200.

I have a 4 year old Dv1700 laptop. Which orignally came with a dual core t2400 1.8ghz cpu.

I upgraded that to a t7200 core 2 duo and it work just fine with no bios update.

I'm not sure if anyone can answer this directly but I'll try to help.

The T3400 is a 65nm chip, 35W power draw, and 667MHz FSB. The closest matching C2D mobile chip would be the T7600 which matches your T3400 exactly, but with a tad touch higher clock at 2.33GHz.

The BIOS may help add support for C2D chips, but normally Compaq doesnt release updates for cpu compatibility but rather other issues. Either way working with the latest BIOS is best for the most compatibility.

Not sure if the T7600 would work, I wouldn't suggest buying a $400 chip until you know for sure. I started another thread for you at notebookreview for some better help, check it here.

Let us know if you can upgrade cpu's or whatever!

Yeah! Finally, there is someone answers my question but he didn't mention about the CPU you suggested. He supposed the P series CPUs to be the best choice (in a document of HP there are two CPUs of this series, those are P7450 and P8600 and one CPU of the T series, the T6400 but not the T7600). Maybe my laptop can't handle this?

I have found something about CPU Upgrade on the Intel's Website, the manufacturer of my laptop's chipset (GM45 Chipset). Currently, the CPU which this laptop is using (Dual Core T3400) is NOT in this list: http://ark.intel.com/chipset.aspx?familyID=35509
The laptop's chipset also support Core 2 Extreme Technology, which I think the latest CPU Technology.
I have another laptop called Acer Aspire 5572ANWXMi that is using the chipset 945GM which support the T7600 (like you suggested) and it is in this list: http://ark.intel.com/chipset.aspx?familyID=22816
