Couple old computers

Hi.

I still have in my possession a couple old single core and dual core computers. Need some ideas of projects to do with it.

Perhaps use one of them as a hardware firewall. There are lots of free Linux-based firewalls to choose from, but a good starting point is www.ipcop.org

The single cores are probably essentially useless, but the dual cores might still be usable as light office/web machines, depending on exactly what kind of dual core they are.

My dad is still running a e7200 system, upgraded with SSD, it's fast now and good enough for his browsing, email and photos.

Im living in a 8x10 feet room with enough stuff to fill up a 4 1/2 appartment so I really need to get rid of it but in a useful way. No need to use as firewall or stuff like that. As a download machine I already got a Dell Inspiron 640m with broken screen.

dual core aint quite that bad.. my high end gaming machine back in the day (2008) XP 32.. 4 gigs of ram.. CF.. played all the high end games pretty well.. including the original crysis..

the cards are only DX 9/10 and XP is a no no otherwise i still recon it would manage todays games at lower resolutions and settings..

to be honest some of these older machines are more capable than some folks believe.. bung an ssd boot drive and windows 10 on them and they become quite snappy.. he he..

I just ditched my £350 a year satellite tv subscription.....the wife isnt happy.

I have nearly convinced her to learn the necessary mouse clicks to watch what she wants, when she wants on an old dual core system instead. They make ideal HTPCS, great o/b sound and multi monitor. Add a wifi k/b and mouse for £ 9.00 you cant go wrong.

I did something practical with one of my spare computers... a 6 tuner TV Card and set it up as a DVR for my bedroom using Windows media center.

That's why we need to push for more cores, right? It ain't necessarily faster, but certainly means a longer life span for these CPUs.

File server /media streamer. A dual core running Linux would be more than suitable, mame /emu machine, old school gaming rig

I ditched my $1200 a year cable bill for a $360 a year Playstation Vue subscription and am now using the HTPC I was using as a cable DVR as an ota DVR..

I solved the problem I put Windows 7 Ultimate in it and gave it away telling people to buy a cheap 20$ pci-e 16x gpu. I just kept a old computer for myself.
