He has a $500-$600 budget so I'm thinking of popping in a 5670.

Any ideas? He's set on getting a quad, that's about all that's solid.

The 5670 is pretty light on power, you could probably go with a 500w or even a 400w PSU and still be fine (although the PSU is an amazing $25 off so you might consider keeping it). In the long run though it doesn't perform all that great though (slightly better than the 9600 GT generally) especially at that price. I would definitely spend more for a 5750 like this combo

because a 955 is $155 and athlon X4 is 89-99 basically half price but retains all 4 functioning cores that would be my guess as the $55 saved = $55 towards a better gpu better mobo larger HDD etc etc

well the 940 you linked is not AM3 its on dead end AM2+ which means its not a worthy upgrade the 925 on the other hand is serviceable

fact is tho the athlon II x4 is still $99 and the 925 is $140 at that price he might as well get the 955 for $15 more both the 925 and 940 are not really options at least that would be my guess

the athlon II x4 give him a quad core and allows more money to be spent in other areas of importance altho i would also suggest trying to get at least a 5750 as has already been mentioned

I'll be picking up an X4 955 this weekend, so I should be able to give you my initial impressions of it then.

My cousin ordered the parts last night:

Good thing too because some prices went up a few bucks overnight. I'm giving him my SATA Samsung optical drive.

That would've been the smarter thing to do but it turns out my cousin was building it for another cousin and he needed all the parts ASAP. His old P4 laptop broke so he needed one urgent. Looks like I'll be putting together a budget rig on Friday, mmm fun!

For some reason Newegg has been charging more for shipping recently... a lot of stuff used to be free shipping.

you should of gotten the NZXT gamma in my opinion its cheaper by $5 or something and the cable management looks much better than beta in my opinion.
Excellent choice on the 5750 vapor-X edition, the card will definitely please him i am loving mine even though its a 512MB version lol.
Does he have an OS prepared by any chance?
