Overall, AMD CPUs seem to be less expensive than Intel ones.

I was looking at, for example, an intel CPU Q9650. What may be the AMD equivalent?

It isn't the CPU that is truly more expensive. the Motherboard, and RAM are generally the more costly parts of a intel system, I went AMD only as I was hoping for a large increase in the performance of the new Phenom II, and it does perform much better, and overclocks well. But the leader is still Intel in overall performance, but AMD is killing them with the cost effective performance, the difference in systems will provide for more exotic cooling, and or a better graphics card or disk system and help the overall performance.

AMD systems are going to be less expensive because they perform lower than that of the Intel systems . Kinda like the Athlon XP and the FX the 4000+ day's Vs the P4 days .
When AMD was on top they sold there FX Chips for over $1000.00 dollars and now since they are lower in performance to that of Intel , Intel can now sell there top end CPU's for over $1000.00 dollars . Mobo's are going to capitalize on this as well as they were doing it when AMD was on top DFI AMD mobo's were $250.00 -$350.00 Dollars .
What gets me is how fast we forget about this .
but now that Intel is on top of the game and faster by far than the fastest AMD Phenom II the Q9650 is still going to be more because it out performs the AMD PII thus it is going to be worth more . If it was AMD taking the lead not one of you would be even asking this question NOT ONE ! But since Intel is top dog and there i7 BLASTS away ANY THING AMD HAS ! then it is an issue ? not with me . The Q9550 Is supposed to be faster Than the top Phenom II ( the 940 I think it is ) so it is priced to compete with the AMD PII 940 . But since the i7 is top of the game it is going to cost more and surly you can see why right ?

There is unfortunately no AMD equivalent to the q9650. The top AMD proc currently (PII 940) comes in at around the same performance as the q9400 for a bit more money atm. In some market sectors AMD offers better bang/buck, in others intel is the winner. Find out how much you want to spend and want you want to do and go from there.

    If you overclock - Intel

If not - an AMD should do you fine.

AMD are generally cheaper and can still do most tasks with ease if you buy a decent one. The new Kuma is great, for under 100$, as is the 4850E, and the Phenom 900 series.

price per performance amd wins, performance intel wins, period. Currently there is no AMD match for the Q9650, the highest AMD goes is the II x4 940 is almost as good as the Q9550.

Again preice / Performance has to go to Intel then as if you look at it from my perspective when AMD was top dog when AMD was king of power and price every one was all over it saying AMD is the best you can get price and performance but we all know that that was not at all true the P4 held up against AMD CPU's but they were not talked about in such a way . In fact the P4 was demonized it was looked at as the ugly duck now we see AMD the Phenoms and the Phenom II 's just can't cut it and we all talk about price / performance all the sudden ? There is no price / Performance at all Intel can charge more for there CPU's because AMD has nothing to counter then except for the Q9400 ! So what ? Price / performance goes to the leader in all areas that is Intel hands down . If you bought a Q9650 then you have it made nothing AMD has can keep up even a 6GHz PII ! so were is the Price performance ?
Again let's recap . AMD has it's place yes a great mid range CPU Intel has both price and performance though . A Q9400 is = to the AMD 940 Phenom II for the price the Q9400 is a better setup .

Yea chill out on these threads man, got people bashing the crud out of AMD over price/performance...when reality it goes way beyond the athlon xp days.

Well I am not bashing nor trying to bash any one . Thing I am trying to do is point out some thing that has been going on for far too long .
When people start to talk about price / performance where were they when AMD was charging $300.00 - $1000.00 dollars for there CPU's and Asus DFI and the like were asking over $250 bucks for the cheapest AMD mobo ? When P4 was cheaper and more cost effective people were all over saying AMD price / performance KING . I got hosed ! I payed out 800 bucks for a 4000+ AMD rig when P4 was HALF that ! all because of price / performance . No such thing IMHO !
And now Intel has the performance crown and AMD is still the better buy ? BS !

I'm not even going to try to understand you for a minute, it seems like all logic seems to go in one of your ears and straight out the other. And it seems you don't think too much about anything you are talking about...

like darren once quoted to you. Your sense of logic seems to defy all laws of physics.

Meantime I'm trying to let this thread die peacefully.

INTEL RAWKS AND IS THE BEST AMD IS $(*^&... I HAD $^& WITH EVERYONES MOTHER WHO OWNS AMD!!!

9650 equivalent? a Phenom II 940 - more or less. The C2D is a bit faster and tends to OC a bit better on average, but the difference between those two is not very significant for gaming/general purpose stuff.

Why thank you , you prove one point and that being you defy all logical thinking . You say you want this thread to die ? Why is the facts that hard to take ? fact one when AMD was on top the king of all CPU's there was only one thing ANY ONE EVER said , This was the price performance ratio AMD ! Now there was not one person EVER saying how the P4 was a good CPU How for the money it was cheaper and performed just as well , OK now we come to today's NEW CPU's and Intel is all over AMD like dog shit on the carpet ! And now the AMD heads to keep there AMD CPU alive say that AMD has both the price / performance no matter what any one says they are wrong . Oh My I for got since Intel's Q9400 is priced at $229.99 and AMD's so called new tech Phenom II 940 is $235.00 That AMD has the price / performance crown as well ? BS ! your narrow minded thinking is not helping any one . When you look at it there is also the upgrading you for get about . the highest PII you can get is a 940 3.0GHz and it is on par with the Q9400 in performance then lets say you want to upgrade your AMD set up to a faster CPU , OMG you can't ! but you can with the Q9400 there is the Q9550 and Q9650 each one netting you 10-20% more performance so you see how your logical aproch is well less than logical ?
Intel has both price / performance and one more thing AMD doesn't have the option of giving you more power with a simple upgrade ! So keep telling me I am wrong and keep telling yourself that I am stupid that will help next time you upgrade that AMD setup ! :banghead:

Currently in Superpi calculation Intel more than twice as fast as AMD so price per performance Intel wins like 3870X2 already said

But this is just a benchmark that is well not at all that CPU dependent . We all know that Intel is top dog and that it also has the price / performance over AMD when you take into account all the factors and the biggest factor being the ability to upgrade . Oh but that is right I am not being logical at all .. AMD must win this as well even if they only have 2 Phenome II's out right ? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...0340343 50001028 1050746347&name=Phenom II X4

There is logic for you !~ and Intel has this to upgrade to .

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...50001157 1051707842 1302825342&name=Quad-Core

OMG What do I choose ? logically it should be AMD right as I will have the ability to upgrade to a faster CPU right ? Yeah right ! :slap:

Of course AMD is the cheaper option and they performe pretty well to, the new Phenom II's are very cheap and offer some good performance and am hearing people OCing it to new heights.

While Intels options can be a more expensive they do offer better to equal performance(the core 2's being equal to the PII's) while the i7 is more expensive it does push ahead of the Phenom II's, if you are a gamer, it might not matter as much, you will be good with a Core 2 or AMD's Phenom II, i7 is a pretty good gaming CPU, But, i would personally recommend if you are also doing more things, like encoding, CS3 and really CPU intensive tasks, cuz thats where the i7 really shines. The Phenom II is actually a good CPU for gaming as of now, cheap with same performance as Core 2, so if its Intel's Core 2 or AMD's Phenom II, i guess it really depends on you, if you already own a AM2/AM2+ motherboard the Phenom II should be right up your ali with a simple BIOS update, while the Core 2's still have a lot of life in them, Intel will eventually move over to the i7 and the i5(the cheaper i7 basically) platform. But, even when they do that, a decent enough muli core CPU( the Core 2's) will be able to handle most simple tasks even when the i7 becomes the norm of the CPU world, but as i stated before it depends what its going to be used for, when multithreaded games come out, the i7 actually may be a great performer in games, the HT makes it into 8 threads and it has 4 cores so it should do well in the future will gaming, but the Core 2's should still be keeping pace. As for AMD, we will have to wait and see the Phenom II AM3 CPU's with the DDR3 memory, i doubt the DDR3 will help AMD catch the i7, who knows, maybe once it is out, it will kill i7. Or maybe it will come close to the i7 and be cheaper in price overall, making it a still worthy gaming rig. AMD will have there winning formula soon tho, and really at the end of the day the consumers win in the end. Weather your a gamer or a video encoder the CPU's are getting better, weather you are for AMD or Intel. As a gamer i have no problem with either company, i just went Intel because at the time i was going to build a new rig Intel was on top(and still is as of now), but i have no problem switching over to Phenom II, but it doesn't offer much of a difference from my QX6700 so there would be no point IMO.

Sorry for the wall of text.:shadedshu AMD and Intel FTW.:rockout::pimp:

Oh so your hating my setup right, you really want to waste your time with me don't you. and yea it's still fair to say AMD still has price/performance. If your mad then you need some ritalin. And further who said I was upgrading to deneb?? and further do you think you honestly need that q9750, when in reality that proc will be phazed out by the time they do upgrade.......which I'm going to remind you wouldn't need unless you benchmark crazy but sigh...I forget I'm dealing with someone who's nonsense defies all laws of physics.

ummm when AMD was king intel still charged ~$1000 for the high end parts PD955EE chips are a prime example there were few benchmarks that they beat a $150 AX2 4400+ but were priced @$1250ea. at least now AMD has dropped prices and made things competitive.

No I am not mad at any one I am however mad when some one talks to me as if I know nothing at all and well that is how you came across .
You have 2 choices to choose from when you go with AMD the 2 TOP CPU'S ARE the 920 and 940 who cares what you think will be phased out they only HAVE 2 CPU'S OUT WTF ??? Are you that blind that you can not see this ? By the time you want an upgrade the PII will be gone and a new socket is going to take it's place what in the 2nd quarter of this year the AM3 is going to be out ? GOD that was a good buy ! Please stop directing your AMD fanyboyisum at me in the form of calling me names thank you . You use such logic as the Q9750 will be phased out what the fuck do you think they are going to do with the Phenom II ? that is not even as good as a Q9550 no way no how !

wrong. AMD is great, and is even better if you overclock :rockout:
Yes Intel is better but as steevo said if you buy smart you can build a faster overall rig for cheaper
