Depends on BIOS settings.
Mine is set to throttle at that temps

Higher than 72.72 °C you may be harming the processor's longevity/lifespan
Anything below 70 °C is safe on stock cooler
Probably start Throttling at 75-85

Can check by using AIDA 64 - System stability test , if CPU is throttling

Not sure if can set Cpu throttling in Bios? , can set speedstep/EIST but not quite the same

That's not right. Ive had a Haswell to 84c and it didn't throttle. And you can really hurt it till 100c

I think its 92c but Id have to check

EDIT:

Here
https://www.pugetsystems.com/labs/articles/Impact-of-Temperature-on-Intel-CPU-Performance-606/

"We know from both experience and explicit testing that modern Intel CPUs (at the very least Sandy Bridge, Ivy Bridge, and Haswell) can run at their maximum Turbo Boost frequency all the way up to 100 °C. "

If your board is cheap it will probably throttle sooner or break

@Tibor Hazafi is the CPU actually throttling right now, or do the temps just feel high?

I've run my 4790K up to 80 C and plenty of others have as well. 80 is absolutely fine. Obviously, lower temperatures would be ideal, but anywhere below 80 in the long run is not going to cause damage to your CPU. When it approaches 100, the CPU begins to throttle and I think thermal shutdown occurs somewhere between 100-105, where real damage might occur.

my 4790K throttles at 100 C and i am sure it wont do any harm.. with a stock cooler quite a few will run up there..

when the cpu hits 100 C it throttles down enough to maintain 100 C.. 100 C is quite clearly what intel consider the safe limit for the chips to run at.. else they would set a lower limit..

i dont run mine that high but its been up there often enough running silly things like prime 95.. its not near 100 C its exactly 100 C on the hottest core.. the cpu then throttles down just enough to maintain no more than 100 C..

the safe (not ideal) running temps for these chips seems to be way higher than what a lot of folks thing it is..

Not at all, fortunately. I'm just simply curious.

About the temps:
I often monitor temps during games, and the absolute maximum was 60°C for now. But running Prime95 for an hour this value is 95°C. It's a little bit high IMO, but I will buy a CM Hyper 212 EVO CPU cooler soon instead of the stock cooler.

Playing Starcraft II (with i5-4570 and GTX 980) the fps drops sometimes from 60 to 40-50 during large fights. And I was wondering whether CPU throttling causes this drops or not. Maybe its game engine related. I don't know.

its not cpu throttling at 60 C.. its pretty much your gpu..

prime 95 is silly.. it runs all cores with all threads ( in my case 8 threads) and small enough data blocks to fit in the cpu cache.. wprime makes a better load and temp tester.. my cpu games at 70 C ish but prime 95 can soon have it up to 100 C.. wprime takes it to around 80 C.. i would like things cooler but short of delidding the cpu or slowing my cpu down (less vcore volts) 80 C during heavy use will do..

ether way it aint your cpu throttlling down causing your frame rates drop offs.. it would need to be at at 100 C to do that.. and during normal use you would not notice when it does.. it simply boosts less..

Isn't the GTX 980 enough for a 5 years old game engine? :O
I don't think so. I think that the fact, that the engine can handle only 2 core of my CPU is more responsible for it. But maybe I'm wrong.

No, @Tibor Hazafi SC2 just runs on a horrible engine. Once you have the minimum when it comes to graphics, the rest is limited by CPU because the stupid game only uses 2 threads.

If you've ever pitted 3 Cheater 3 AI and yourself against 4 enemy Cheater 3 AI, you'll know that not even a 5960X can stop this engine from running your framerates into the ground. It's just very CPU bound and there's no way around it. Lol lagtv did some ai vs ai episodes a while back called AI Craft I think and in the first episode the APM peaked at 1674 APM. Both AI were above 1200 APM at various times. This, in combination with the crappy CPU utilisation, is the kind of sh*t that causes lag. You could have a 4GHz 5960X and Titan X and it wouldn't make a difference, because as far as the game is concerned the 4GHz 5960X is no different from a 4GHz 4790K or a 4GHz 4690K.

Thanks for the explanation. I have calmed down.
By the way It's not very annoying, because the game has stable 60 fps anyway, only during full army battles drops to 40-50, and finally this isn't bad either. I was simply afraid of hardware defect.
Will these fps drops occur in Campaign mode? Or is it just Multiplayer/Online related (because you spoke about lag)?

40-50 is not a half bad place to be hahah. Sometimes when I f around with that many Cheater 3 AI bots each spinning 1000 APM, my framerate drops to 10-15 fps.

Campaign almost never has those big team fights with smart enough AI so it's smooth. Usually ladder is ok too because, again, 1000 APM is not achievable by most humans and it's usually not 4v4.

One more question. Should I run the Campaign in Offline mode? Or doesn't it matter?
