CPU Upgrade help

Hey there! Been out of it for a while and forgot what i need to do exactly to upgrade my CPU! :laugh:

Currently running an e5200 on my p5Q DLX and just picked up a 2nd hand q9550, can i just pop it in and go or do i need to make some BIOS/system chnge's? The e5200 is a great lil' chip but it was time to move up to quad's before they became ridiculously overpriced, or non-existant. Appreciate the help

what BIOS are you currently running? from the CPU support list its saying all PCBs and since BIOS 1805. http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/Intel_Socket_775/P5Q_Deluxe/#CPUS

According to CPUz i'm running 2301, if that's the case can i just reset everything to zero (e5200 has mild OC) pop in the new chip and fire everything back up? Do i need to make any specific setting change's in BIOS to run the quad? Like i said been out of it for a while and lost the manuel for the mobo so :banghead:

Another Q would i have any prob's running the quad on Xp 32?

Wouldn't hurt to reset your bios, but other than that, your good to install.

Ever since my problems with this motherboard after updating the BIOS without setting everything to stock, I will now be doing so whenever there is a CPU upgrade where there is significant performance difference.

I ended up having pretty much all the timings, FSB etc etc not functioning at all.

I could have set the clock speed in BIOS to something ridiculous and have the system still boot into windows but have nothing change when looking at CPU-Z

Thanks again boy's! Up n running p95 ATM checking stability and such, chip was 2nd hand from unknown seller. Seem's like a low vid chip 1.144v on auto BIOS setting? My e5200 was ~1.2v IIRC

Intel Core 2 Q9550 Specs

1.1v is well within the VID range of the Q9550.
What your CPU VID is set to is up to what the BIOS has been programmed to be set to.

Well ran ~6hrs p95 small FFT yesterday and ~6hrs large FFT today no problem's at stock setting's. Max temp i got via Asus probe is 58c, ambient is ~25c, so a ^T of ~23c @ load is not bad i guess? Idle temp's in BIOS are 34c so ~24c ^T from idle/load again not bad i think?

Wanting to try a mild OC on this but haven't been able to find any thread's on the forum here, any suggestion's? I know about Google but figured i'd stick with TPU seeing as i've always had luck getting help from the member's here :rockout:

1 other thing before calling it good; check task manager for 4 graphs in the performance tab. If it daoesnt show then report back.

I see 4 core's loaded @ 100% (p95 still running), what is the significance here? I would assume that the 4 would be up n' running standard. Are there some instance's where/when you have to manually activate all 4 core's?

Sometimes windows gets fubard and have to mess with a few settings to get it working right to get all 4 working.

Thankfully i didn't run into that! Currently @ 355 x 8.5 1.12v :eek:

I'll slowly try to get it up to about 3.2ghz - 3.4ghz should be good enough for my need's. Hopefully thing's stay smooth :toast:

Those q9550 chips were known for some nice 4ghz clocks, you should try it? 471 x 8.5 1.3V?

I'm well aware of the many successes people have had with this chip, hence why i picked it up

But alas my "bench day's" are long done, not interested in finding every last mhz @ this point i'd like to just have a nice stable OC, if i get to 3.4ghz i'll be quite pleased

Don't forget i'm coming from an e5200 @ 335 x 10 so i can already notice the improvement's just from the CPU swap itself! Going from dual core with 2mb cache to a quad with 12mb is a BIG step up :pimp:

I wanted to build this PC with this chip from day 1 but couldn't squeeze it into the budget at the time, i was lucky enough to find this one local for $160 so think i did OK :eek:

Off to run some Pi & p95 see where i end up, thank's to all :toast:

I've seen a large portion clock that high as well but like i said i'm just trying to KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) Afterall i'm not the brightest bulb on the sign :laugh:

If you can get it 3.8Ghz+ that's cool. Going to notice diminishing returns in performance past that.

Can someone reccomend me a monitoring proggy that will play nice with my setup? For some reason Asus probe has gone bonker's after ~10min of p95! Which is extremely odd considering how much time i spent running p95 over the last couple day's, without issue, also as soon as i close it and re-open (after terminating p95) i get a 46c reading! :wtf:

Should i be looking for any specific version? I ask because with the Asus poo-poo-probe i had no issues with the dual core and no issues with the quad @ stock setting's but when i was attempting to test the small OC i got on it right now after about 10/15min it was reading 112c :eek:

Which i know was false becuase the air coming out of the case wasn't even warm and when i stopped p95 closed & re-opened poo-poo-probe i was getting a reading of 46c :twitch:

What's the best site to get it from?
