If you do only one card in the secondary PCI-e slot, what speed does it negotiate at? Can you confirm that the slot itself is capable of x16 (or even 4x)? Like (I thiink) Law said, the slot may be damaged. Just want to be sure all slots work at 16x one by one.
I'll try that and see

For me your MSI motherboard don't respect standard for crossfire .... now you can listen to people who lie to you; but in absolute your MB does not meet the standard crossfire to maximize; but it can work if you do not run after the performance ....

I own the same board as the OP and it works in X8-X8 when two radeon cards are installed. The top slot works in x16 when just one is in there.

In his case, the second slot defaults to x4 instead of x8 speeds when populated and that is a malfunction. Check for damage in the second slot first. Then consider a BIOS flash to update the motherboard to current standards.
Many of the new BIOSs that are released have fixes in them for problems that others have reported in the past. So if you're having issues, Flash that sucker.

I now put each card in the secondary slot by their own. Check GPU-z with first card in, PCIe x2, did a render test, dident up the speed only changed it to 2.0 instead of 1.1. Put in the other card there and checked and it gave me PCIe x8. Now i've put bouth back in and it went back to the way it was, PCIe x2 and x8

I'll check for damage in the slots and then I'll reset BIOS, see what happens if nothing changes then I'll update BIOS. Thanks so far guys, atleast now I have something to follow. Its likely the slot is glitchy, because It did run in x8 as I said before when I tried the second card in the secondary slot. But yea, it changed back when I put in the other card.

C'est la vie. Such is life. It might be worth checking the pins on the slot for a bent pin or something. If you're lucky, you might be able to save the board. For now, I think your options are either stick with x8/x2, sell the two cards and buy a single 280/290, see if you can find a pin out of alignment, or get a new board.

Good luck!

Maybe one of the cards is not doing well in the last slot, you said one card stayed in 2x mode in the last slot? the other went to 8x? put the card that went to 8x in second slot in the second slot and the other in the top maybe you can fix it that way if the one card stays in 2x mode in the second slot then this one must have some error.

I had the card the went to x8 in second slot in when I put the other card in the first slot but then that card just went to x2 instead.

Updated BIOS now and nothing has changed. I tried looking at the second slot for bent pins or anything out of the ordinary but I couldent find anything wrong.

The motherboard makes the primary slot run at X8 when the secondary slot has a GPU in it. This part is normal. With two cards in, it never runs at x16-x8, just x8-x8.

The problem is that the second slot is defaulting to x4 instead of x8 and disabling the GPU that's in there.
It's probably not the GPUs. It's the motherboard.

Have you replaced the Crossfire bridge yet?

Can you RMA the motherboard to MSI? Is it still under warranty?

Defaulting to x2, but the first slot has done that aswell when the second slot was x8. I've tried two different bridges. Yes I belive it's still under warranty, I've contacted MSI on their support page and still wating on a reply. You think I will have to replace it?

try another bridge and 16x and 8x is not a issue at all the difference in performance is roughly 3 to 5 fps assuming you are running at 2K or higher if you aren't then its not even mention worthy

Also its entirely possible you have a driver issue uninstall the gpu and chip-set drivers ensure that both cards are connected and have the bridge installed when you go to re-install the drivers

Also @URBAN303 sorry you are wrong period who ever taught you about these imaginary standards, you keep going on about was WRONG. Especially with the new GCN 2.0 cards, because there is FAR less buss overhead.

The problem is that I need them to run x8-x8 because right now they only run x2-x8 or the other way around, x8-x2 no matter how I put them. I'll try a third bridge and report back

In a rare occasion i had two Nvidia cards running perfectly fine when Single, one card didnt run stable in SLI.
Maybe one of your card the one that goes down to 2x has some of the same error that it works fine just not fine in Crossfire

perfectly fine when running in dual configuration that 2.0 x16 gets split into TWO x8 slots that board doesn't have a PLX chip so all the lanes are provided by the chipset
Try disabling PCI link state power management in the windows power options if you have a slot thats not throttling up thats what I would check first

Ah ok, I've tried a third bridge now and nothing changed so I think it's safe to say it's nothing with the crossfire bridge.

That could be it but it's a long shot. I will try to find out if it's one specific card that goes down to x2 or not

hmm try checking the mouting bracket and make sure that the card is getting 100% seated in the slot you could also try cleaning the connector and slot with some 90% rubbing alcohol (be sure to give ample time for it to evaporate)
else as a final step try re-seating the processor it really should't matter with AMD but try it anyway
else you may need to RMA the board

Use DDU (my link above) to uninstall the graphics drivers and then (using just one GPU in the primary slot) reinstall the latest NVIDIA drivers and reboot.

Then try installing the second GPU with the bridge and restart. If it's still messed up, RMA the motherboard. My MSI 970A-G46 is working in Crossfire and SLI without any problems.

Good luck with it.

From my experience I wouldn't use DDU but if only it were the last last resort... user be warned.

I have issues at times where I loose my crossfire tab but only under extreme OC when it goes bad.

I can remove the driver and re-install but that doesn't fix the problem.

In order for me to fix the problem I just reset the bios and then the CF tab shows up.

Give it a try and see if that helps ;)

Thats wut the 970 chipset does. I think the Apu High end chipsets do the same

Honestly id say reseat your videocard and perhaps reinstall the same driver ontop of itself

Crossfire in my board works great. (exactly the same board) One slot is x16 speed, and the other is x8 speed.
With both cards installed (two R9-280X OC) and the crossfire bridge in, the system defaults to X8-X8 speed. This makes for some very good gaming.
SLI works good in this board as well. (two GTX-570s)

"crossfire demand exactly the same values" is not correct, but I believe that you (URBAN303) think it is,................

Ok so now I uninstalled drivers with DDU in safe mode with only one GPU in, rebooted and reinstalled, shut down and installed the second GPU but still no change. First slot x2 PCIe and second slot x8. Switched places of the card and now the second slot did x2 PCIe and the first x8 instead. It's making me think that It is one specific card that changes to x2 when I put them together
