Ok so ruff0r seems to have been right. Tried now with the 7870 with one of the r9 270x and they both ran in x8. Tried switching to the other r9 270x and it went down to x2. So apparently it's one of the cards that cant seem to handle crossfire.

When I put that card in my brothers machines x16 slot the monitor dosent reply. But the "defect" card runs in my machine in PCIe x16 when it runs alone. It's only when I install a second GPU that it goes down to x2

Colored slot = same value

Sli (don't know) but Crossfire i know ! ;)

crossfire demand exactly the same values, so if you want a CF not efficient. So listen to the ignorant which reassures you! they are wrong then listen to them;)

I have warned you.

You are free to ignore my warning, but believe me you will rethink about my advertising ; sooner or later ... but you will rethink about my message ...

it is unfortunate but it will result in your choice ...

sorry mate, but you're the one out of the loop here. so far all i've seen is incorrect advice from you post after post.

Also they only run at 1.1 even though my motherboard supports 2.0 PCIe

that could be just the card idling down to save power.

try cleaning the contacts on the card, could be dirty.

Have you tried putting just a single card in the second slot, leaving the top slot empty?

The card dropping down to x2 is the issue, as crossfire requires at least an x4 link on the second card. This isn't a power saving thing, the power savings drops the PCI-E link level from 3.0 to 2.0 to 1.1, it does not change the number of PCI-E lanes in use.

What drivers are you using?
I had a problem with crossfire with 2 280x's a couple weeks ago.
When I installed using the 14.4 they would not crossfire and kept crashing my system out.
I uninstalled those and reinstalled with the 13.9 drivers and everything worked fine.
Also the 14.7 beta drivers work after I upgraded over the 13.9.

Did you reset the bios like I suggested?
Yes, reset and updated.

I am using the 14.4 drivers, I will try downgrading to 13.9
Have you tried putting just a single card in the second slot, leaving the top slot empty?
Yes, when I did that they both ran at x16, It's only when I have both cards in that a specific card drops down to x2

Sorry to be a late inclusion but never saw an answer.

This could have been suggested already, I did read through the thread but could have missed it.

I had the same problem initially, wondering why my 2nd (slave) 270x with a 990fxa-gd80 (similar specs to you) was only running at 2x PCI E speed when I had seated it in the 2nd full x16 PCI E slot.

Firstly, crossfire only engages when you go into a full screen application so when you are idling or running a benchmark in windowed mode it does not use the 2nd GPU. It wasn't until I monitored the 2nd card in GPU-Z on my 2nd monitor and ran Furmark in full screen that I saw the PCI E switch to the full x16 speed. Alternatively you can disable ULPS and the 2nd card will remain on and stay at full x16 speed.

Sorry if I'm blurting out stuff you already know and this is a genuine hardware issue but initially I thought I had a problem until I saw how crossfire really does things.
