Decided to Lap my e6600

It's more than likely electroplated onto the Cu. The thing is, if the Cu is VERY high grade, e.g.99.999999% O free then it'll be fine and not really oxidize, especially in a virtually anoxic place such as a high pressure interface between two metals with a TIM between the surfaces!

Props for that explaination, rather than the typical "Your wrong idiot" type post!

It seems so obvious to me! No viable amount of Oxygen will get into the intermolecular space between the IHS and the cooler base as far as I'm concerned given that the metal's surfaces will be so flat and have a TIM acting as a protectant. As long as the cooler has a Copper base and you keep all the exposed IHS covered with TIM I think it's safe to say it'll stay that shiny for the forseeable future...but don't quote me on that lol

It makes me wanna lap the crap outta my 165 which is on it's way. I think it'll be an idea to try that to lower temps at >270MHz with a Vcore increase before I try the lid off thing GULP

Anyhow, it wasnt that bad. It took me a night of watching the simpsons, family guy and everything else on FOX on Sunday's. And I wasnt doing it the whole time.

EDIT : BTW... I tried taking off the IHS on an old P4 and it was really simple. I would seriously think about doing it on my C2D if it wasnt soldered on and worried about cracking the DIE.

It looks about as shiny as a Swiftech socket a cooler I polished up. It only needed a T-Cut tho as it was REALLY high grade Copper, beautiful it was...I regret ever selling it now as I'm building my parents a Barton based system!

Looks nice, but there is such a thing as lapping something too perfectly The reason for that is the more perfect the surface actually is, the harder it is to apply the correct amount of thermal compound as too much can hamper cooling. With a surface like that, I would try using about half a grain of rice to start with and see how its spread after even pressure has been applied.

I see what you are saying... however I am doing the same to my waterblock too. So I think I will need VERY little to none. (I wont actually use none, just want to give you an idea)

yea use a very small amount to start with, the whole point in thermal materials is to fill in any machine milling and micro-scratches on the surface, and it doesnt look like your lapped surface is suffering from either

there are still slight scratches in it, so I will need some. My mine concern was to make sure it was as flat as could be.

You would be surprized how uneven it was. I took pictures, but I am at work right now. I will try to post them tonight

You can't say something is "too" perfect, it's either perfect or it isn't and I seriously doubt with a "flat" surface and some wet and dry any of us will ever get a perfectly smooth surface so we will all require some degree of TIM! Besides, with the immense pressure the interface will be subjected to I'd say it's rather likely that the excess TIM will be ejected out at the exposed surfaces due to it's viscose nature.
My T-Cut method is rather tasty tho I have to admit, but I am biased towards my methods

Err, small pieces of kitchen roll (very mildly abrasive) with a dab of T-Cut. Apply one and rub about on the surface for a bit til it's blackened then start again...repeat many times 'til the surface has been polished then clean with some form of strong organic solvent such as alcohol!

I just use a old credit card. Put a small drop on to the cpu and spread it out with the card.
Works perfect.

Yes, in a scenario such as this a surface can be too perfect, the smoother, more shiny, something is, the less pitting, micro-scratches etc it suffers from. This on the outside appears great, however it has a flipside of requiring very little thermal compound for optimum thermal properties. Even with a syringe its very difficult to control the flow of any compound and you will either end up with a bit too much, or a bit too little. Even the smallest amount of extra unneeded compund can see temps climbing quite dramatically under load conditions, anywhere up to the region of 7c depending on contact surfaces, pressure, compound, and amount of compound used.
