For about over 2 days straight with barely enough sleep, I am unable to solve this problem when owning my first server tower. Because that the drives were wiped, I've attempted to install Windows Server 2008, but ran into this problem.

I don't understand why 2 of my sata drives are locked. They both are connected to the LSI SAS 5 controller card:

I've used the command prompt to do diskpart, formatted to ntfs for an hour, assigned the drive to C: and after all that, it still says to "ensure the disk's controller is enabled in the computer's bios...." on top of that I went through the LSI configuration and synced both drives and still won't allow me to install windows 2008. I google searched the problem for hours and unable to find a solution to this problem as this is the first time I've been using a server based system. Please if anyone had faced a similar situation, please provide step by step how I can make the primary sata drive connected to SAS 5 controller to be my primary drive for windows installation?

More pics below of the problem I've experienced in not allowing me to install Windows Server 2008. Over 2 days and still unable to fix it. Sata drives are 250gb and are new, the problem is allowing BIOS to recognize the drives where it is both connected to the LSI SAS 5 connector card.

I've deleted the drive that was ntfs previously and it became raw. When I had it converted to NTFS before (when working on cmd prompt, goes like this (to show you that I know what I was doing): DISKPART -> list disk -> sel disk 0 -> list vol -> sel vol 0 -> format fs=ntfs quick), the Windows server 2008 was not allowing me to install as it is stating to "ensure that the disk's controller is enabled...." it's FRUSTRATING :(

When you go to install Windows Server are you installing RAID drivers before installation? Windows default drivers for RAID may work albeit poorly. I've almost always needed to install RAID drivers during install because my RAID wasn't detected.

I have not done that yet. I assumed if it detected the disk 0 unpartitioned hard drive, then it has to do with something with the bios that I may not configure properly to sync with the LSI SAS 5 connector. I could not find anywhere in the bios how I can solve this issue. As per windows installation to have the LSI connector card working, how can I install the drivers if windows was never able to install on my hard drive?

Just set your RAID up and then use Dells SBUU (Systems Build and Update Utility) disk to install your server OS. You'll need to find an older version of SBUU to use to install Windows Server 2008 on to that older system, but Dell should have it.

EDIT: Download the ISO and burn it to a disk.

How do I set my raid up in the Poweredge Bios? It's all set in IRQs and I'm not sure which IRQ is the raid that contains the LSI SAS 5 Connector.... please let me know

In your pics you have your raid array created. You'll just need to use the SBUU to see the array and then install the server OS. The SBUU has everything you need and will step you through it.

I will definitely try that. Will let you know if it works or not. Thanks!

I've just checked the site: http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/04/Drivers/DriversDetails?driverId=YH0GX
Dell Systems Build and Update Utility, v2.4

But on the compatibility list, Poweredge sc1430 is not listed...

Hmm yea, I just checked the products Drivers and Downloads and found this. Last update was "03 Nov 2011". It should have everything you need. :toast:

EDIT: I don't see 2008 listed, but your system is compatible. I'd still keep searching different SBUU's until you found the right one.

No problem buddy! Let me know how it turns out. :toastL

Ok, I haven't responded for several days and that's due to a graphics card problem. As for your solution, it worked! It worked because the software recognizes the LSI SAS 5 connector in my PCIe x4 card connected to 2 of my sata drives which are known to be "vitual" drives, unlike sata drives that connect directly to the sata connectors to the motherboard. Now because of installing the openmanager software, I am limited to options I can install, particularly either it's small business server os or Windows Server 2003 standard edition. I went with the Win Server 2003, and attempted to upgrade my OS with Win 2008, but it won't let be because I am running my OS in virtual drives, running in Raid-1. Win Server 2008 does not seem to like OS running on virtual drives, running a new OS that only reads drives that are non SAS related. So that's what I faced.... currently... unable to upgrade and stuck with Win Server 2003, until I had another hard drive to connect to the sata port on the motherboard and run it that way, which it most likely will work.

Anyways, if I am wrong, please reply. As for the graphics card, I tried this card on newegg: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...4487063&cm_re=evga_720-_-14-487-063-_-Product
EVGA 02G-P3-2724-KR GeForce GT 720 2GB 64-Bit DDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x 8 Video Card

The connector is a PCIe x8, perfect for this board since it has an x8 slot, but on the spec side it runs x4. It seems that the card just shuts off when I wanted to run bios or load to windows, but at the beginning, the screen POST fine, but when accessing the bios, it turns black. I suspect that the card does not like it when my motherboard slot supports x4. So my question is, is there an x8 slot card that can run this server board and perhaps is the BEST OF THE BEST? I need a card that can and will run not only games, but also rendering animations when playing with Carrera 3D professional. Please let me know

Relating to my Poweredge server, I need to know if anyone would be able to provide an iso link for the SBS 2003 std edition. I have the genuine license key and been using the Win Server 2003 eval copy and it's expired. So if anyone would be able to help with that issue, I would eternally be grateful.

The Openmanager software restricts me to use either Win 2003 server or Sbs 2003 and Red hat. I am only comfortable with Windows
