Is there any fix for the icons disappearing?

Maybe the just got shut off. Try Right-click on desktop -> View -> Show Desktop Icons.

And if that didn't work, on the same menu click on "personalize". Then click on "Change Desktop icons" in the upper left. Then make sure the system icons are still enabled.

    Thank you this fixed it.

It was the fake FBI scareware. I had removed the hard drive & piggy backed it into another computer & ran Malwarebytes to remove it.

doing that can remove malware fairly well, but at the cost that it cant 'repair' a system that isnt running. at least you found out they were just hidden, and not deleted.

Ya, that wasn't my first choice about getting rid of it. I couldn't run a scan on the running system though. That fake FBI thing would pop up in safe mode too & could not Ctrl+Alt+Del or access anything for that matter.
