Looks interesting, but are the updates going to be microtransactions, or free?

They don't list many tracks as of now, and the price is fairly low, so it may be a minimal content game as is.

Since when has updates to early access games cost money?

I wouldn't know, as I've never bought into early access games. Some have the sound of miocrotrans to me. The way Project CARS worked was there were pricing tiers. Those at or above full retail price giving you much more privileges. Here they only mention one low price and minimal up front content, so naturally I was skeptical whether it was equivalent to full retail or not.

If it's just paid alpha/beta testing it's one thing, but they don't really mention the details of ongoing structure regarding content, or whether there will be DLC.

here's the answer
Polygon said:
"We won't be charging anything for that new content," the studio said,. "Regardless of when you join us you'll have access to everything we produce for our early access period at no extra cost. So that's what we've made and this is just the starting point. Over the coming months we'll be adding more cars, more tracks, new game modes and features we haven't even thought of yet — features that you are going to think of and help us build."

Can't find any major fault for this game.

I bought it and it is currently downloading. I'll let you guys know what I think of it. What I really hope for are 10+ mile stages, like RalliSport Challenege 2 had.

Loved the old CMR's, bought this when I first found out about it. Played a few hours and here are my impressions:
1) Much harder than all the previous DIRT's. Corner braking is a no-no. Playing with all assists off have to fight for 3rd place (Clubman difficulty ;()
2) Proper rallying with multiple stages, service areas between. Seems that AI drivers get into problems! (overheating, lost exhaust, dnf)
3) The sound of popping a tire is amazing.

Seems a bit weird, that a Codemasters title is in early access, but didn't care in the end. The game seems extremely promising! Put GTAV aside to play this..

A couple of friends are playing and love the game. Say it is between CMR and dirt 3. I'd like to grab it myself but will wait untill I play through some other games first.

So far, I'd say it's nothing like Dirt 3 other than graphics. Only done two races, but the tracks are tighter, the surface is waaayyy more varied and the cars handle pretty much like you'd expect. The starting car feels a little floaty, like it's not quite heavy enough, but it reacts like a proper FWD. Hit the brakes and try to turn and you're not going anywhere other than straight.

My thoughts exactly. Have had the game since launch, played through 8-10 full rallys so I had a chance to try out different cars before I posted. It's very much what I have personally been looking for in a rally game for many years. It's not perfect, but given it's "early release", it's pretty darn good, to me.

FYI, I am using a Logitech G25 for controls, if that matters to anyone.

I just picked this game up and it blows away Dirt 2 and Dirt 3. It really does feel like a realistic rally simulator.

Going from the FWD Lancia to the RWD Escort is such a huge difference. What makes me laugh is the people complaining the 1960's cards have bad straight line stability and handling. Do they not even think to realize that 1960's suspension and car technology wasn't very good? You '60's car isn't going to handle or drive perfectly...

This release seems a bit confusing. With the normal Dirt releases they push out media attention and such. So is this next in the Dirt series? If so where's any advertisements? Or is this just a side game while they continue a well selling series?

It is the next in the series, but it's an Early Access game, so it's not a retail release, hence the lack of advertising. Though I am a bit surprised that it did come out of nowhere.

Yeah that just seems strange for a series with so many fans. Especially considering that the Dirt series has a rather large following on consoles. To do such a silent early access on PC only is just strange. It seems like something a small Indie dev might do, but not something a company does that needs to turn large profits to keep afloat. Going from basically promoting Monster and Block to a silent release, just strange.

Well, it makes sense because it's a totally different game. It plays nothing like the first three Dirt games.

It makes sense on a departure from the past, but it doesn't in that a company needs to make money to run. I'm just worried that this sort of release won't promote the game well enough for them to fully support it and bring it out of EA to a fully fledged game, in the end, that all costs money, and a departure from one artist direction to another doesn't change that it costs money to make the game move forward.

You seem to forget they charge $40 for this "early release" game. They are making money. If there is not a lot of response, they drop the development, although I think that is highly unlikely, given what the game offers. The number of devs needed to update and add content to this game is not very many, since it is that complete already. This isn't even in "beta', to me...too much polish. They need some voice actors to record the track calls, and maybe more tracks, but the basis for all of that, including the physics, is pre-done via all their other driving titles (GRiD, DiRT, F1 2015).
