No because I'm smart enough to differentiate between fiction and reality. That said, full virtual reality would be sweet (as to where I could dedicate a room to it with some sort of treadmill like thing under my feet that I can walk/run on in any direction and duck/jump/etc. and I could hold models of weapons etc.) and I could see myself spending more time in there than real life....

Do you think if games become too realistic it will begin to f*ck with people's minds?

With today's shovelware companies, rushed development, poor testing and never ending bugs and glitches it's hard to believe that video games will get realistic anytime soon.

They frown on shooting people and stealing cars...trust me.

Which brings up this point: If the game is so real you cannot see the differences between it and reality (I'm talking decades, if not hundreds of years from now), how would it be to kill people there? Would you still want to kill people?

But then the computer wasn't playing the role of a problem solver, just a modern convenience.

Isn't it the modern convenience of solving problems faster with minimal human effort and time required?

I do. I know it will f*ck with my mind.

I think you have a weak mind then. A game is just that; a game. I watch movies all the time and they look as realistic as my real life and I don't get tripped out.

I think if realistic games fuck with your mind that you have other issues to begin with.

I have a nice strong mind that knows reality from games, tv and such. ;)

Killing people per se doesnt really have to have any impact. Imho it all depends on how involved you feel yourself in the killing.

If the killing doesnt mean anything and does not have any real consequences, i dont see it as a problem. Its the same thing our parents(atleast for some of us :p) needed to learn when they saw us first playing first person shooters and the like.

Killing pixels means nothing persé, however small the pixels may be, it becomes a problem whe the pixels represent something meaningfull.

In the movies you are not the one pulling the trigger.

This is only true if you don't have human emotions. I'm talking actual REAL LIFE virtuality here, not just tiny pixels. Unless you're a cold bastard I'm pretty sure you will feel something when killing someone and everything around you reacts to it as it would in real life.

Unless I'm overshooting the scope a bit, but I assume we are talking actual virtual reality, not just good graphics. What I'm talking would be very different from any sort of game that exist today.

(as a bit of disclosure I can say I'm not a big fan of killing humans/intelligent life in any form, because I can't ignore that I'm supposed to go around and pretend killing other humans. It's fun, yes, but on an intellectual level I feel it's pretty unpleasant)

Well, I would then like to compare it to a good book, with a good storyline. If you are really emotionally involved with a character, why would you then kill it? And alternatively, killing an opponent wouldnt have such a great emotional impact i guess.
Off course, you can always think of something.

I can certainly relate to that:)

Most people who think something like this would be "fun" have never even shot a gun or killed anything with a gun their entire lives. Ever see someone die a painful death in person? Seen someone burned alive? Seen guts all over the ground? No? Then I don't know how you could think it would be "fun" to see. Desensitization will be the downfall of modern civilization.

As a matter of fact Ill just quote myself.

Just to let you know it has been proven that violent visual media does in fact desensitize the brain to violence. It works in the same manner as Cognitive behavioral therapy and Immersion therapy. Will it cause a kid to run out a kill someone? No. However it has been proven with enough desensitization he will not feel repugnance by the thought. That's a fact. Doesn't take a genius to see someone with a chemical imbalance and large exposure to violent media might be desensitized enough to act on an impulse normally to him would be disgusting had he not been exposed to large amounts of virtual violence.

For example the Norway shooter cited his "training" on the Airport mission in MW2. Prime example of someone with an imbalance acting on an impulse that was empowered to him by violent media. Columbine killers DURING THE SHOOTING said "This is just like Doom". Aura shooter thought he was the "Joker" from the movie.

I like games just as much as the next man here (My clubhouse after all) but to say there is zero link between violent media and a lot of the issues we are facing today is just a sign of naivety. I wouldn't let my kids watch a night of the living dead movie but, a lot of parents will buy their kids CoD: Zombies.

I said when that airport level in MW2 came out it was gonna be bad for the industry and the gaming culture as a whole and was flamed for my statements. Now you see why. Now you understand the shock value to sell a few crappy games is gonna ruin gaming for us all.
Now think about that with REAL virtual reality.
