Well,:

almost any game that works in 5.1 would also work in 7.1... the audio engines scale depending how many speakers you have.

I have no idea if any content, other than some movies I have, are 7.1, 100%. Never really tried any, to be completely honest. Even as it is, I kinda question 5.1 in games, and the rear channels are either not used very often, or I have the volumes too low.

I dunno that it's even worth the effort to test. I know Batman AA works in 5.1, just using standard onboard audio passed though to a receiver.

Anyway, The OP was wondering how to get that 7.1 out from the pc to his new receiver...but there are few encoding options for him to get it over SPDIF. So he might be only left with analogue as an option. But he doesn't have the analogue input on that receiver, I don't think...

don't forget that optical can't truly pass 7.1 HD audio to the receiver. you need hdmi if you want the best sound in 7.1. optical will compress the signal so much it will be pointless.

Yeah, kinda stuck between a rock and a hard place...but he's got HDMI...so should be able to use that to get HD-Audio.

Unfortuantely, that's gonna require an audio card with HDMI-out...

and then...will he get 7.1 that way? Like, we know ATI's HDMI by itself does 7.1 LPCM, or at least, is supposed to...kind of expensive to buy a $250 audio card for just 2x extra rear channels...

it all depends on the use. if he only uses the rig for gaming then he should just settle for 5.1 as it is pointless to shell out $200-300 for a card that does 7.1 with all the HD codecs. if he is using it to play bluray movies then yes it is worth it. however, very few blurays movies actually have 7.1 tracks. i own a few of them and they do sound great but make little difference in the grand scheme of things.

this is why i bought a ps3 years ago. it plays blurays perfectly and can either decode all the codecs natively or pass them off with hdmi to the receiver to do so. and then i just game in a nice 2.1 setup with a separate amp. in the end i think i saved money.

I agree 100%.

Even more so, I find Stereo HD-Audio better than "SD-Audio" 5.1 surround.

Kinda a crappy thing, HD-Audio. Cost of Entry is just too high.

yea, it sucks. but if you look around enough you can find some pretty solid deals. i actually don't game in "HD-audio." the speakers make all the difference in a 2.1 setup. my headset uses spdif and they sound amazing so i get hd-audio there. but for when the wife is away i crank the 2.1 analog setup and it sounds even better.

There must be some way to get 7.1 through SPDIF in "SD-Audio", but what the OP reports says that's not possible. I think he might want to use onboard...I sold my HT Oemga striker in 2007:

Actually, I might still have that card.....and if I recall, I got rid of it for the same reason.
