No, you won't loose all your data, just all your BIOS settings.

Isnt the problem fast solvable?
Buy a proper S-ata Drive?

A Dvd Burner costs about 30 bugs and then you can burn dvds faster then ever before?

Would this be a solution to you?

the point of this forum is not to buy new things, it's to solve problems.

Yeah but the solve of a Pio Drive only its that it is so slow that you cant use it.
The Manufactures for motherboards simply build a crap support for Ide drives and pio drives.

You can see this effect on every Gigabyte Board they simply hang up short time when u use an Ide drive and plug in a new cd.

So the best solve for this would be a new burner.

I think this problem cant be solved but try I will watch this thread.

and I think sending a newbe or even a n00b in the bios to reset it and change every setting he has to change so its hardware is running normally again is a risk that you have to be aware of. Some tipps here n this forum are made for people who know what they are doing. So sometimes it is to risky to follow this tipps.

His Drive is running in Pio mode because his bios autodetects the drive as pio only.
So normally after a bios reset nothing happens apart from that the bios is detecting the drive as pio drive.

Bios "main Screen", "primary IDE Master" screen, select the drive- choose auto, CDROM, or ARMD; then select proper settings in "LBA","block","PIO'"DMA", etc.

It is a Windows problem, not a BIOS problem. I have fixed it on hundreds of computers.

Do what I said, uninstall the IDE Channel, then reboot. It will automatically be re-installed and switch back to DMA mode.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/817472

There is a knowledgebase article on the problem. It happens when the IDE device registers too many error. Microsoft, in its infinite wisdom, decided that it would be a good idea to add to a counter every time the device reports and error, then force PIO mode after so many errors are encounters(I believe it is 6). However, that counter is never reset. This means that from the moment you install Windows your IDE drive can only have 6 major read errors. The drive can have 6 read errors simply by putting in a scratched CD.

The proper way to handle it is to reset that counter once the device has a successful read. Which is why Microsoft has issued a reg tweak to set it this way.

The problem become even more compounded when poor quality IDE drives are attached to the system. Unfortunately Lite-On drives are known for triggering this problem because they give a unreasonably high number of errors.

On top of this, Gigabytes IDE controllers are also kind of poor and tend to throw a lot of errors also. So when I Lite-On drive is combined with a Gigabyte motherboard using an independant IDE controller, it is almost certain to happen eventually.

So, try what I said. Uninstall the IDE Controller, and read the knowledgebase article and apply the reg tweak as needed to help prevent the problem in the future.

Wahoo, it worked lol....i uninstalled the primary ide and then restarted...it started up and installed the drivers itself....I checked it in device manager but it was still in pio mode...so i restarted again and went into the bios and changed the primary drive back to auto except for udma mode...logged into windows, checked device manager and it was changed to udma2....to make sure i put a dvd into my drive and copied and paste onto the desktop while playing some music and it wasnt lagging, my cpu was still in idle....harray it worked thanks heaps guys i appreciate it so much, and really sorry for the trouble.
Now i'm gonna try and learn how to flash my bios too but not anytime soon maybe in a couple of weeks lol....sorry again but could i ask which is quicker or better;
-pio = definitely not
-singleword dma
-multiword dma
-or ultradma
i'm assuming ultra dma but correct me if i'm wrong.
What is swdma and mwdma?
