Speaking with Games Industry, Frank Gibeau explained that EA didn’t do a very well when it came to marketing Dungeon Keeper:

“I don’t think we did a particularly good job marketing it or talking to fans about their expectations for what Dungeon Keeper was going to be or ultimately should be.”
“Brands ultimately have a certain amount of permission that you can make changes to, and I think we might have innovated too much or tried some different things that people just weren’t ready for.”

This kind of thing is why most devs just keep making sequels and making game series last far beyond what they really should. They are scared to innovate too much and then failing. There is just so much more money in releasing the same thing over and over again, pumping out games that are far to similar to the previous, because people want more of the same. Which is unfortunate really.

When you're doing a sequel of a cult game, tradition comes first and innovation second ... especially when innovations are in app purchases.

No, we're always ready for a good screw-job from EatsAss.

Squash Bullfrog and then having the audacity to release this travesty decades later just serves as reinforcement.

a) Didn't know Dungeon Keeper was remade (marketing fail).
b) They targeted Android and iOS, not Windows where the people that actually ever heard of Dungeon Keeper play.
c) Android and iOS markets are already saturated with games. If people aren't explicitly searching for Dungeon Keeper on said stores, it might as well not exist.
d) Free to play. Nuff said.
e) This and that!

EA succeeded at failing again. They deserve what is coming.

Hey, I heard about it, and was pissed off as hell at the mess they made of it. I was seriously considering purchasing an EA product again, against my better judgement, until I started reading all the crap they'd done with it. Fvck them. I'll stick with War for the Overworld, and do it on my PC.

Dungeon Keeper

OMG Please bitch ( EA ), that the only one when it's more like nearly every game they do is a fuckup, what happened ? i did not know they cared..

If they cared a little less about money and more about making a game to enjoy they actually might make a money making game.

Assholes just because they cannot release a newer lame game each year "COUGH COD".

Very true and very sad and another reason I can't game much anymore. Sick of waste-of-time-and-money rehashes and sequels and crap. I want innovative new games! I don't have the money to blow on re-hashes!

I read this, along with the fact that EA was saying that the monetization in Dungeon Keeper was steaming BS, and have come to one conclusion. We are watching a company (EA) that wants to physically split into multiple competing divisions. I'm looking at the next Microsoft here.

Division 1: Game development. This division will make the games, and is limited such that 80% of games must be continuations of previous franchises, 10% must be shameless cash grabs, and the remaining 10% may be new and innovative attempts to create IP that can be fed back to the 80% as the nostalgia factor fails to overcome blatant over-use.

Division 2: Monetization. These people purchase the finished "games" from Division 1, and figure out how to make them more profitable. Shear off a chunk of the game and make it day 1 purchased DLC; check. Release a drip feed of maps that take a week to construct, and then charge another 1/6th of the initial purchase price to be able to play with your friends who already bought that DLC; check. Take old games and severely cripple the mechanics so that the nostalgia dollars begin to flow; check. Defend the practice of cash gouging until you're about to release the next steaming load of BS, then apologize for the "error" (without ever offering a substantial apology) and say you've "learned your lesson" without ever changing anything you've done; check. This division will be where most EA executives transfer to.

Division 3: PR. These poor souls will observe the games from division 1, and then drink themselves stupid. In the drunken haze they'll write press releases and design ways to contact the media. This department will send sample out to the press (I'm thinking things like a collectors editions with actual sharpened butcher's knives in it), produce demo footage for trade shows that absolutely doesn't reflect the actual game play, and it'll all be capped by a barely covered hatred for everyone that buys their products.

Division 4: R&D. This will be the cream of the crop for EA. They'll experiment with new ways to both hobble games for paying customers, while determining exactly how much you can charge for as little as possible. Part one will be new forms of DRM. Just connecting to Origin isn't enough, we'll need to develop new Spore style root kits, activation limiters, and disconnects for single player games should you happen to be guilty of the sin of a poor internet connection. Part two will be something entirely new. Rather than charge $60 for a new game, they'll charge $50. Of course, they'll make multi-player a $20 unlock. They'll develop new DLC that makes anyone who hasn't bought all of it incapable of playing with 90% of other players. They can top this off by cross-branding; basically have a big name company under-write development of a feature (think a new set of skins by a specific designer), then charging consumers for the download of said feature. Who loses here? Consumers are already paying for other DLC, so why not screw them once on the DLC price and a second time on never actually investing in development.

Snark aside, EA has been full of crap for years. How is any of this new? One arm says sorry, then the other arm commits the same crimes. It used to be root kits, then it was activation limits, it then phased into online vs. hard copy pricing, it transitioned into DLC pricing, and now it's wound up in crap monetization on mobile gaming. I ask how anyone with a brain is still tolerating this?

If you want better games, then don't buy the crap. Battlefield 5 will be an improvement on 4, but 4 will still be playable months after its release. Mass Effect deserves to be buried because it never delivered on a decade of promises, which were centered around choices you made in a narrative. Plants vs. Zombies doesn't need a team FPS modification, it just needs a competent sequel (PvZ 2 wasn't bad, but if the resources weren't divided between the two games I'd bet it would have been better). EA has lost sight of games (the "artists" part of EA), and they're run by bean counters. Bean counters don't understand that gaming cannot be indefinitely copied without becoming stale, and sales figures tend to agree with their conclusions. As long as we support EA financially we continue this myth.

I'd ask that everyone goes out and buys two or three indie games the day the next CoD or Battlefield came out. That $60 could buy three or four new Indie games, and it would demonstrate to the EA bean counters that we aren't mindless sheep. I know that isn't going to be the case, but I live comfortably in the fact that one or two more high profile launch failures will finally get people to listen. Hopefully Battlefield 5 releases with Diablo 3 style server errors. Maybe then people will realize that an afternoon of of "gritty modern combat" can be far less fulfilling than building a house and lighting it on fire for giggles (think Minecraft). It's too bad that we've grown complacent in gaming, but I'm sure that for every person who wants change there are a dozen more who buy the new FIFA, NFL, CoD, Battlefield, and Halo game the day they are released. When that changes, so too will our choices.

Regrettably, I do. I wish Bioware and Maxis would go indie but...fat chance.

I've never spent a dime on free to play and I don't intend to start now so at least I'm not contributing to that heinous practice.

For one thing, Bioware is part of EA's problems. They suck.

Also, free 2 play can be good.... When done properly. Planetside 2 was F2P and it worked really well IMO.

This "complacent gaming" is why the industry got so big. And I don't see why people should turn away if they have not done so already. Gamers are retarded and they are mindless sheep and they deserve all the shit they are getting because they are the ones who told the devs/publishers it's OK to make shit.

You have to realize there is no Bioware and there is no Maxis (and there is no spoon) ... those are just brands now and devs come and go in and out of these 'teams' as projects dictate.

I, to a mild extent, agree. Gaming got big because the average douchey dude-bro was swept up in it. Said dude-bro is basically a high-functioning autistic, in that they can get things done but will not notice anything beyond what they are focusing on.

My hope here is that enough lumps will shake people out of their stupor. You have an amazing amount of games by indies out there right now, that don't follow any traditional formula. At the same time, you've got the big formula games face planting so hard that it is actually getting coverage in the main stream media. I believe that the average dude-bro can be mobilized for positive change.

Imagine, for just a moment, that only 10% of the CoD/Battlefield market moved into another game. Maybe they wind-up in Saints Row, and the crude humor with gun-play entices them to try something new. Another 10% of "hardcore" multi-player fans get into Warframe. A genuinely well designed free-to-play game is something they can now recognize. A final 10% move into something far darker, RPGs. The inherent leveling and "story" components that are being injected everywhere pique interest, and suddenly you've got people who enjoy playing something like Dark Souls or Killing Floor.

My hopes are all based upon continued failure by companies like EA, and educated people pushing others to get the same education. I'd agree that the vast majority of people are getting what they ask for and allow. At the same time, my friends moved away from that crap because 20 minutes on Warframe (a game they had never heard of at the time) made them wonder why anyone continues with CoD and Battlefield. Sometimes all it takes is a small push to get people to see something far better. I've got about 6 copies of the most recent CoD whose gathering dust will attest to that.

Not always thew case were the gamers are to blame.. A classic case would be UBI Soft and what they id to all those people of the Ghost Recon community. Although they have been getting back to what GR should of been with Farcry2/3 but this is many years late but nice to see it's on the come back unless they manage screw it up again with FC4.

And some times change is not always good either often it's part of the problem take Dragon Age 2 and you know their are piles of games were change is what screwed a game. If UBI did not screw all those people with GR they would had a much bigger fan\community base that BIS do with the now called Arma series.

Bioware need to get of their asses and make the next NWN1 and not pawn it out to some 1/2 shady company like they did with NWN2.

Bioware need to get of their asses and make the next NWN1 and not pawn it out to some 1/2 shady company like they did with NWN2.

You just called Obsidian shady. :(

It's good to see that you have been successful helping your friends to see that there are better games than the likes of modern CoD games. The problem runs much deeper than just uneducated people making poor choices and not being aware of what they are doing imo. When Battlefield 5 comes out you will see a thread here, on other tech sites and all over gaming sites that are immensely popular. Most of it will be about how screwed up BF5 is probably. Lesson learned from BF4? In most cases no.

The most recent example for me that really hit home is when people were calling for a boycott of Origin when it came out. Even though EA is doing the same thing as Valve with making their games exclusive to their DL service. I took these people seriously and also boycotted Origin until I saw an article from an EA spokesperson that Origin had 50 million accounts last year iirc. I saw people that "detested" EA that were calling for a boycott of Origin when it came out posting about their opinions of games that were exclusive to Origin. Maybe they were pirating the games. I don't know but I finally signed up for an Origin account a few months ago and bought Mass Effect 3, Dragon Age 2 and Crysis 3 for $10 each on a sale. Even if the games suck I'm not out much $$$. I think I will really like Mass Effect 3 except for the ending because I love Mass Effect.

Shady no, no were near as good as Bio sure.

Mass Effects good ( end was not all that bad people just like bitching ) and they stuck to what the 1st was and not changed shit up to much like most do. I cannot say the same about DA2 sadly they pretty screwed that by how you controlled the chars.

If you make a awesome game make another awesome game by not changing the controls or how the games played.

Obsidian is as shady as I am, and that's zero percent

Shady no, no were near as good as Bio sure.

Maybe not as good as Bioware once was, but always with great stories/ideas, way too lofty goals (they always reach those goals no matter how buggy the game is when is out :D) and always short development cycles dictated by publisher. The company made: NWN2, KOTOR2, Fallout New Vegas. All worthy sequels.
