I'll tell ya something thats old in modern games is A.I. As far as trends go, that's the only area i'd really like to see some more push on.
Old games like Turok 2 had A.I. that could "see and hear" and also run behind cover. For the most part, that really hasn't changed at all. A few games have offered better flanking and searching realism, fewer yet have used scheduled routines based on time of day. But as cool as the "retrends" like 3d or gyrometers are, they need to focus more on things that keep people in a game and not just glitter to sell such.
Recent games tend to circumvent making competent AI by touting multiplayer. Let other human players be the "AI" in the game.
