I brought some ek blood red coolant but after watching a few videos of people using it they say it fades and can block up your blocks should i take it back and get the clear stuff?

Mayhems coolants are really good when your going for looks. If you want raw performance use distilled H2O and if you want to chill your coolant to below zero use anti freeze.

water wetter and distilled water, if you want colored add a few drops of sugar free food dye. (seriously) just make sure its the good quality tasteless stuff. if you get the neons food color kit most of the colors are UV sensitive also.

you only need wetter if you are going to chill the coolant, its clear though, unlike most antifreeze.

How long does it take to fade/clog? I've been using mine for over 6 months now and the color is the same as the day I first filled my loop, but I had to drain the loop two times already, once when I moved my Titans to my Haswell board, and again when I moved them back to my SB-E board, I recycled the coolant twice, so maybe that's why it's still good?

I though about water but like that fact coolant isn't conductive so if there a small leak my system wont short out, Ill take the blood red back and get the normal clear then i don't need to worry about any problems that my pop up, Also you want be seeing any of the loop only the res so the colour doesn't matter to me.

I'm not sure i really think there may be some bad batches going around with shit growing in the bottle.

You only need to use one. Either the kill coil or the additive. Though my loop is running ~2/3s anti freeze and that stuff had a nice big toxic sign on it so I didn't bother with anything.

I've been using EK Ekoolant Clear Premix 1000ml Coolant and I've had no worries thus far.

I'm using it to go through my orange UV tubing.

antifreeze is less of a coolant then water. in a non chilled system i would do 1/3 non corrosive (like dexcool, its bright orange, or toyota, its blood red) coolant and 2/3 distilled water. and then you really should not need to add kill coils or other additives. and the only reason for the antifreeze at all is to keep the water from growing bacteria or moss.

most green antifreeze is corrosive.

After a few years of not believing what everyone says and trying all sorts of coloured fluids and tubes im with the flock on this one, get coloured pipes, uv red for eg and use clear coolant ,most sludge over time ,fade or stain the pipes and blocks and just are not worth it ,since tubing is soo cheap given how much you use you will likely end up swapping it quite often as i do,every slight upgrade and other flush, its not tricky with compression fittings all round.

Kill coil dont do shit IMHO! I have something better then a cheap kill coil, an actual chunk of solid silver in the loop and the res wall is looking cloudy and getting worse.
Id rather go for the blood red coolant and see how it goes. Not all colored coolant goes weird... heck I have had the pink dexton antifreeze fall out of solution a while ago...

considering it is surface area not amount by weight that is suppose to 'kill microbes' then no, the kill coil would be the better option. unless it is a HUGE chunk of silver. there are lots of reasons that make adding a rogue chunk of metal to a cooling system a bad idea. not to mention that to have enough surface area to actually keep a gallon of water sterile your entire tubing run would need to be made of silver and you would need a silver agitator.

the best way that i have found, a new jug of distilled water, a new jug of your choice of additive, mixed no more then 50/50 preferably more water then additive. and a good clean system to begin with.

the reason automotive applications do not have as big of an issue is that they actually produce a large amount more heat and it will actually kill off living stuff, but the corrosives are added to some automotive coolants to deal with mineral deposits left by boiling away water. most mechanics fill car coolant systems with cheap coolant and water from a garden hose. that would be bad in your pc, but with a little adujsting, distilled water and a high end coolant free of corrosives will do the job, just remember,

WATER DOES THE COOLING, ADDITIVES KEEP THE WATER STABLE.

Been there and done that, and thanks for the lesson in cooling.. anyways it don't matter, clean system, distilled and additive will still cause a film in time.

I've been doing this for some time and think next time i'll add a drop of anti bacterial soap to the loop and see how that goes.

i wonder if a small inline filter for a water line, like on a refrigerator, could be used to remove the bio-film. there's not enough heat to boil it away so you will have to remove it mechanically. i think if it was a good water additive with no hard chemicals it would not mess up the charcoal in the filter.

I use distilled water with nuke anti fungal drops and valvoline pc additive plus a kill ballball nub silver thing and some uv lights, no fungal outbreak since with red uv tubing
I once thought boiled tapwater would do for a bit wow worst mess ive made so yes I've gone Over the top

I heard the coolant is meant to leave a film so your block dont corrode is this a problem? this is my 1st loop so i really have no idea to ether use water or coolant does coolant last longer than water ?

Thanks for all the feed back,

I've changed the blood red to clear ill give it ago if i get any problems ill flush and change to water.

Even Mayhem acknowledges all dyes will stain over time. That said his stuff is still pretty popular amongst people who are well aware of that fact. I woulda tried it but he never sent me my promised free sample when he was first getting started out a couple years ago. Other than that I avoid the stuff as well...

Distilled water and colored tubing all the way. I used some colored coolant for a few months and it clogged my block and stained fittings and res. I now use plan distilled water, colored tubing, and a cap full of 91% alcohol
