EVGA GTX980 & GTX580 In SLI

I am currently running two GTX580s in SLI and I am waiting for a new EVGA GTX980 FTW to arrive tomorrow.

I am wondering if it would be a good idea to keep one of the 580s to use as a dedicated PhysX card and use the new 980 for the graphics push.

Would that set-up actually be better than the 980 alone?

I know I can just do some benchmarking but I'm wonder whether anyone has done something like this already....I'm too lazy lol

Cheers!

Oh yea....I've been coming to this site for a very long time but this is my first post here (woohoo)

No Just the 980

Heya Jetster

Can you explain just a little please?

Is the 980 powerful enough to handle it all without some juice from the 580?

Would a GTX970 be a good choice for a dedicated PhysX setup?

Thanks for the reply!

you do not need a dedicated PhysX card. Todays GPUs are powerful enough to handle physics calculations at the same time as everything else. Not to mention there is a very small amount of games that use PhysX effectively.

Thanks!

What I am thinking about is future-proofing my setup. That's why I went for a 980 instead of getting a 290x.

So, basically, I'm thinking about doing it for when a 980 just isn't enough to handle some future game and all that, while also not breaking my bank account.

Yea would not worry about a PhysX card anymore as already stated the difference between having one on todays cards and not is non-existent.

Hope your happy with the GTX 980, its going to feel like a huge step up from dual GTX 580's!!!

i had a spare gtx 770 lightning sitting around. i put it in my rig which has 2 x 980's. the 770 helped abit in physic.... but not worth it imo

I decided that I'll not use the 580.

Mainly because of the power draw of them and due to the fact that they just aren't fast enough to outweigh using the 980 alone.

One thing about the EVGA FTW card is that when I boot up they sound like a plasma-pack in Ghostbusters. Good thing though is that they are completely silent after about 45 seconds of plasma-pack sounds.
