Ive just been given 3 weeks notice 'unless otherwise' that I will be losing my job @ work - it sucks. but i managed to get enough info & it generally boils down to theres 15 of us working in 1 department 7 will be staying while the rest will be leaving & my name wasnt on the staying list.

SoOoOoOo in light of that, I have decided to run 3x12hr shifts each week for 3 weeks until the day where my contract officially ends. with that cash injection ive decided to invest in a newer machine which I will spec out for you, & if you guys will kindly give me some feedback or 'rate' my build I would be very gratefull!

to save costs. stuff such as graphics cards, dvd-writers & roms etc etc will be salvaged from my old machine which is then going to my dad (dude loves waiting for hand me downs)

    so here goes......

Case: Antec 900 (Possibly Antec 1200 depending on final salary)

    CPU: Intel Q9550

    Mobo: Biostar TPower I45

Ram: 4Gb (2x2Gb) OCZ PC2-8500 Reaper HPC edition

    Cooling: Tuniq Tower 120

like i said, all additional parts will be salvaged from my old machine.

obviously i will overclock it. would a i7 920 still whoop my machine?????

That looks good. You may want to consider my Gskill Pi 1100's I have for sale. I promise they will clock higher than those Reapers. ;)

For cooling get a Xigmatek HDT-S1283. It's miles ahead of that tuniq. Have you considered Phenom II? That would be a lot cheaper. At least it is in the US..

hmmm anything AMD is of course cheaper then intel here in the UK. Ive not given it too much thought to be honest. all ive heard is Intel is leagues in front of AMD & im paying for performance not how 'green' & efficient a cpu can be.

    do they still overclock well???

    ::EDIT::

Ive had a look at the Xigmatek. trying to get one is not gonna be easy but i have seen very similar designs such as an OCZ Vendetta 2, Noctua NH-U12F, Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme & one of them Scythe ones so take your pic i guess.

Well, Phenom II is about even with the Intel 45nm quads. i've been happy with my recent switch back to AMD.

Most people are hitting 3.8-4.2ghz pretty easy on Phenom II 940's. And with the 940 you get an unlocked multiplier so it's a lot easier.

well looking around my hardware sources. their still selling the old phenoms, & the only place that does it is selling 2... X4 920 & X4 940 - the 920 being the 'cheaper' option but it only has 6mb cache compared to the Q9550's 12Mb & the X4 940 is more or less the exact same price as the Q9550 but again with the smaller cache & ive read enough to know that bigger cache is always better. as I also tend to multitask moderately with my machine

Am I the only one who is confused by the part where you're basically getting fired and decide to spend large amounts of cash?

Its not actually a 'Large amount of cash' if i wanted to spend large amount id spec out an i7 build.

as for the confusion, I have more then enough money left. the 9x12hr shifts are overtime so i DONT have to actually WORK 9x12hr shifts but I want a new machine before i lose my job. if anything cuz i aint spent money on pretty much anything since i started my job.

I cant make it anymore simpler then that

    No you're not. :shadedshu:ohwell:

How about finding a job first then buying a rig. If not, well for future refernce, I call dibs on that processor that I will see on the FS thread a month from now.

    well since you were fired
better to stick with your machine
then build a new one once you settle into your new line of work.

How about people just focus on what the guy wants instead of telling him how he should spend his money? (or not in this case)

well when you lose your job its higher priority to get another, cause if you dont you wish you didnt blow that money on a new computer, it takes money to maintain your current lifestyle,

    thanks to all who posted.

sorry but i dont have the budget for that & also with the current Euro prices. I could buy a i7 920 with a mobo & STILL have money left over for the price of one of the Q9650's. Prices are in excess of
    380-430GBP.

Im still after a mid range setup. Im already pushing it with the Q9550 as the roughly the exact same price as the i7 920 = around 240/250GBP. - my CPU is pretty expensive but everything else is fairly cheap. least i aint paying 200-300GBP for 4Gb of DDR3 ram thats all i can say.
