Fluctuating CPU Frequency (5930k + x99)

After using AIsuite to tune my CPU. My CPU freq is constantly fluctuating between 1.2GHZ and the 4.5GHZ it's set to. It even does it when I'm running programs. What is going on and how do I fix it?

Found a fix after trawling through google for a while. Disabling Speedstep and C-states in the BIOS will either lower the frequency of CPU throttling or completely stop it from happening. (side effect is increase power consumption, but that's no issue for me)

It's a feature and there are no reasons to disable it. Unless the sole purpose of your computer is to watch the CPU frequency change of course.

And it probably heats up more running at full speed all the time.

Turn off Speedstep/all C-states.
Set "power" options in Control Panel to "High Performance"

I would say that too, set the processor minimum state at 100% but I was not sure if this option would be available for desktop computers

Stuff like this baffles me when I look at his rig and think, so much power in the wrong hands.....J/K Nice rig you have there OP.

TBH I would have left it all enabled and run a few games to see if it had any detrimental effect (which it shouldn't). Any power saving when you have that sort of setup is good to leave incorporated (unless it causes issues)

The clock was rapidly fluctuating between the 1.2ghz and 4.5ghz while in games causing lag. This is why I disabled C-states and speedstep. To stop it changing the clock.

I wouldn't say it's power in the wrong hands.... I'm just inexperienced.

you probly need to adjust the turbo power limits and turbo duration limits
leave the cstates alone

no idea on your board hunt though the bios settings it should be easy to spot
one should adjust the TDP overlimit and one should adjust how long its allowed to stay over the limit there may also be one that controls the amperage limit
the frequency changes should not be having any performance affect

GIgabyte's current UD3/UD4 X99 boards must have power management disabled to get optimal memory performance. The difference is around 25%. It's a bug. I wonder if this bug is on more than just gigabyte though.

Righto after going through the bios and disabling power saving options (and other options that ASUS say need to be disabled).

I've got a stable clock of 4.5GHZ voltage at 1.40000

Base clock of 125
All the other voltage settings I left to Auto.
My ram is at 2750 (maximum 2800 "safe")

I ran prime95 for a few minutes without error. CPU got up to 80 degrees C
I ran a 3Dmark Firestrike and pulled a decent result (http://www.3dmark.com/3dm/6369625?) however, my GPU is overheating and the fan isn't speeding up to cool it down. Is there anyway to force the fan to 100%?

I have X99 Deluxe and 5930K, and do not have this problem you describe, but I am using NVidia GPUs. I run 4.5 GHz CPU/4.0 GHz Cache with 1.265625V vCPU, 1.175V vCache, 0.872V VCCSA and 1.2V DRAM. I have all power saving options ENABLED, so that my CPU down-clocks on idle.

The issues with boards having bad memory performance with power states enabled is beucase the L3 cache/ringbus multi also adjusts speed, and the profile for these changes seems a bit funky.

Be care ful with this board and VCSA on automatic settings, as very little is any adjustment to VCCSA is needed on this platform, and too much or too little can cause stability issues. WIth some memory kits, the board will default 1.25V VCCSA if XMP is enabled, and this voltage might be what is causing your issues, if such is happening.

This clock seems stable when I'm in Win7 (no crashes or overheating so far) however it didn't boot the first time around when I got home from work. So yeahhhh

When you have boot problems, look at the post display and note which code is showing. Will go a long way to figuring out what the problem is.

If you aren't running the most recent BIOS ,then I suggest updating ASAP.

I flashed to the latest BIOS using the EZflash tool before I began overclocking.

It appears it doesn't like booting when cold. Just a first guess.

I forgot to check for the code on the POST screen. I will next time I boot up
