For $80, which one would you get?

Athlon II X4 620 (2.6GHz)

For $80 which one would you choose, and for what reason(s)?

WHAT WAS ORIGINALLY LISTED AS THE 720 WAS A TYPO, I MEAN THE X3 710, NOT 720.

The 720 is 2.8ghz, and I'd get that. More L3 cache, better at gaming, overclocks higher..

The 720 is 120, I can get these two for 80. For my dad's purposes, the two I listed is more than enough. ^_^

If they are both $80 I would choose the 720, it clocks well and probably will have a higer resale value when it comes time to upgrade.

You should get the 720, i have one and its fast @ 3.8ghz for what i need it for, i was able to unlock mine but thats just a bonus

For gaming I have my main rig, this is for my dad (and everybody else) so I don't need anything fancy like a black edition processor or anything. At most I'll be doing a mild overclock. He'll never even use more than 2 cores, I just want a good well-rounded processor since it's a family/guest rig.

720. oc easily on any mainboard thx to the multy and has 6mb of l3 cache which is good for games

The 710, sure, it's not a BE, but it should still OC to 3.4ghz+, and there is a decent chance of unlocking it into a quad. Also, for most apps the L3 helps a lot more than the 4th core of the AIIX4

athlon x4 does much better in day to day work if you use all 4 cores

The X4 is definitely better for any DC project that you choose (F@H, WCG, etc). Cache sizes don't matter much if at all in F@H and WCG, the 4th core will make a far bigger difference. If you do decide to go for the tri-core (or even the quad), please do consider WCG instead, F@H is mainly GPU-optimized and WCG only works on CPUs. With the X3, there is no effective way to use all 3 cores in F@H (SMP uses 2 or 4 cores AFAIK, 3 single processor clients yields crap PPD), so 1 core would have to go idle.

Both will game just fine.
I will say go for the X4 to be future prove, the X4 is better @multi-tasking.
More and more applications will support multi-core.
In terms of OC, the 620 should do at lease 3.4Ghz.

Yeah I've sort of decided on the 620, mainly to do some occasional crunching for TPU. I have to get myself a nice set of speakers first though! My comp comes before the family's.

Definitely the phenom 710, like the others have posted there's a chance to unlock the 4th core and the fact it also has the L3 cache that the Athlon II lacks,

Another vote for the 710, get the L3, if you don't game at all get the 620, but even withe the 710, maybe it will unlock.
