I just read a review on the HD4870 different from the one posted in the link.
The 4870 is a very good card especially if it comes out at $299 as originally intended. However it is only a small notch behind the GTX 280 in most benchmarks apart from Crysis.
Crysis is a very very heavy game on graphics memory. There could be a possible improvement by having 1G of video memory for the 4870 due to its large memory bandwidth.
If Crysis is a game ahead of its time (I am aware of some poor code in it and its heavy CPU dependence - although can be ignored when you have a C2D over 2.7 Ghz -) then more memory on DX10 cards may be a must over the coming months.

For those that do not know the result of better performance due to memory capacity, it is seen when you compare the 9800 GTX results to that of the 8800 GTX OC or Ultra in Crysis.

To bad the 2 year+ old 8800Ultra still beats the 3850 in most benches i have seen.
RAM has always been more is better then the speed of it, Vram is slightly difrent, but not that much, ATI is the cheap mans video card, im glad you guys are happy with 2nd best all the time, with crappy drivers, but no thanks ill keep my Nvidia, cant stand not having DV, games just look bland with out it.

4850 = 9800GTX+
4870 = GTX260
GTX280 = the king stands alone.

I was wondering if the 4850 would benefit from 1024mb the other day when I saw W1zz's reviews, but seeing this again makes me think twice. I'll wait and see before I make any judgements, but I think my next card will be a 4870. Hopefully I can get my aunt to get me one from the US before she comes over next month. :D

interesting 10-15% slower than the gtx280 while being less than half the price. and it beats the 4850 by 25-35% which is a big improvement over the 3850/3870 gap. nice to see competition is back.

Not sure if this would make it significantly more expensive, but instead of having the 1gb & 512-bit bus, make it have more pipelines. If I'm not mistaken, AMD's latest still only have 16, while the 8800 series has a heftier 24. I think that it would be a bit of a performance boost, justifiable if the price isnt hiked up too badly.

If you didn't know (I didn't): Force3D is the ATI brand of Inno3D

hexus checked that and they have no relationship.

Eagle-eyed readers might be wondering if Force3D is any relation to Inno3D. Both companies happen to be registered at the same address, but Force3D is telling us there's no relation.

woohoo i might be right over w1zzard :rockout:

edit: forgot to right about the topic :( my bad
acording to the supposed force 3d 4870 benchmark and the supposed leaked benchmark this is quite accurate and similar.

Just a guess i think AMD will improve that next year. As i know of ATI have 16 were as NV has 32.

shaders were surely the problem with the R600 and looks like they sorted it out now. Just that the GTX 280 as a few more unless there's a game that will use ATI's shaders correctly.

you people crying about 256-bit only obviously have no idea what you are talking about. please calculate bandwidth gddr3 1000 mhz @ 512 bit and then gddr5 1000 mhz @ 256 bit.

if the 4870 was $649 with 512-bit and 1 GB you'd all cry that its so expensive
And when will they come out with something newer?, GDDR5 is just so yesterday (note sarcasm) :slap: LOL

What is ATI thinking? Only 512MB and only 256bit? Come on, they would have a killerproduct if it was 1024MB and 512bit. It's 2008, 512MB can last another 6-12 months tops.

they are going with what works, im sure HD5 or 6 is being worked for the 512bit bus, remember the 64bit and 128 bit bus was around for alot longer than 256bit.

the 8800gtx and 8800 ultra have 24 rop's while the 8800gts (g80) has 20 rop's and the 8800gt and 8800gtx (g92) have 16 as well as the 9800gtx and 9600gt. yet the 9800gtx outperforms the 24 rop 8800gtx. rop's are important, but the overall architecture and how it uses them is more important. so just counting them up isn't going to give you the whole picture. this is how the 16 rop 4870 is competing with the 28 rop gtx260.

4870 > gtx260
4870x2 > gtx280

it was a typo, and notice is said 4850 = 9800GTX+ not the 9800GTX you can buy right now.

Yea was a typo, but remeber not to long ago how long did it take ATI to beat the 8800GTX.

I have nothing aginst ATI i wish they would step up their game to help drop the price of NV down to resonable lvls, i know i cant buy a $600.00 card each year.

selene NV card is expensive because the waffle that it's made on is expensive and the die for the gtx200 is huge!so they cant fit as much on the waffle
